Non-profits and the government. The project I worked on was government-funded and not important for policy purposes. It did have biomedical implications, but not directly.

In fact, people never publish papers proving things. They only publish papers that show evidence supporting their hypothesis(es), which makes their hypothesis more likely to be correct, or they publish evidence that disproves a prevailing theory (but generally it is replaced with a new theory in the same paper).


Talk about stereotypes. I know a number of people who go into business because they love R&D, accounting, etc. I know academics who went into the field for protection from the economic conditions (i.e. they are hardly ever let go when tenured). Different reasons for different people.


It really depends on the state. In NJ, it's essentially guaranteed employment unless you are a total idiot or really lazy. As for academics, it's not as easy as you think to change your area of research. You may think it is, but it requires a time-intensive process (grant writing, purchasing of equipment, etc.) which is why many professors stick with a specific area for their entire careers and just expand upon it.

Government funded is tied to policy. There is either a policy to expand knowledge in a particular area (generally for some purpose), or there is funding for research on a topic to determine policy.

As for non-profits, I'd be interested to see where THAT funding comes from. My wife works for a non-profit... funded by the government. She provides grants for projects to research how to improve air quality.

As I said earlier, there are some philanthropic funds out there for research, either granted directly or passed through a non-profit or charity. However, I really don't think these are many.

Not all government-granted research is tied to policy. Many are initiatives by the government to spur scientific research. I'm not saying whether this is right or wrong. But it is. But now we're really getting into semantics. Many research projects lead to cures at a pharmaceutical company, but may not have been originally found in a university biochemistry laboratory an example. In the university laboratory, you may have been seeing how, let's say, an anabolic pathway works. Scientists at a pharmaceutical company may see that research and have an idea for a drug that targets a step in that pathway. A lot of scientific research involves making discoveries that furthers knowledge along which can be stepping stones for other, bigger discoveries.

Until we start talking actual, verifiable science and numbers, this whole discussion is pointless. It's like a bunch of noobs trying to optimize their builds in a game.
