Quote:
An Italian divorcee and her new lover are accused of killing her ex-husband Calogero Lo Cocco by suffocating him with a block of butter shoved down his throat.
They had apparently hoped the evidence would melt away, investigators say.
But a post-mortem found remains of the butter in the airways of the victim and the pair were unmasked, the Corriere della Sera newspaper reported Saturday.
On Wednesday Lo Cocco, 40, had gone back to the marital home he had not visited since his divorce, where his ex-wife lived with her new boyfriend at Campobello di Licata near Agrigente in southern Sicily.
They had set upon him and suffocated him with the butter, before claiming he had arrived drunk and attacked them, forcing them to tie him up, when he had suddenly collapsed and died.

Wow, I wonder how they came up with the idea it was murder, based on butter in his airway. This is a good CSI script.

WTF? Not only does it clog arteries but airways too!? I suppose I can take solace in the fact that next week the news will announce it cures asthma or bronchitis.

Forcing them to tie him up? First clue right there.

I'd be willing to bet it was the volume of butter involved. Very few people consume a quarter pound of butter all by itself, much less in one sitting.

Doubt it had anything to do with the amount of butter in his stomach. Finding a good amount of butter in the lungs would make it obvious that it was impeding his airways and he was forced to inhale it as he gasped for life.

Sounds like such a mafia-way to kill someone, for some reason.

I wasn't being that specific.

On a side note, he would have to have been fully restrained and tied before they started with the butter. I mean, you don't attack someone with butter.

So they tied this dude up, and, with butter, started to cram it in his mouth, watching him choke, watching him struggle, and slowly die.

I don't understand how people can do stuff like this. I understand how you could shoot someone, or even stab them 57 times (get upset, freaked out, keep stabbing). But I don't get this sort of thing.

Genghis Khan and his armies slaughtered thousands of women and children. Nazis tortured many Jews, and most of the Nazis were normal people. Muslims are fond of burying women and stoning them with small rocks. I think it's just a cultural thing that prevents you from understanding.

And the gulf is that wide between modern Americans and modern Italians? Your red herrings notwithstanding, you don't think it's just the difference between a non-murderous and murderous outlook?

I would suggest that two people can egg each other on to do something like this more easily than one (non-psychotic) person could. And, this is a lover's triangle, so I could see the divorcee goading her new lover into taking care of the old one, despite the gagging and choking sounds.

That must be the case, but I would have thought the opposite. You have to be so **** crazy to do this (I would think) that the odds of finding two people sufficiently crazy would be near impossible.

I thought this too, but how? Make like a crushed ice slurry and put it down?

Why not just use "pillow therapy"?

Woah. I thought it was just butter. Now we've moved on to eggs? What's next? Murder by bacon and toast?

That would take a while, but death by bacon is totally doable!

/groan, Taly :D

Bacon? Uncooked bacon would totally work. If it was cooked, I'd be like the gy in that Wes Craven movie, Shocker, I think it was, when they tried to electrocute him. He just kept taking it. "C'mon, more bacon!!"
