'Firefly' returning to cable; Fillion says he'd play Mal again -- EXCLUSIVE
by James Hibber

Browncoats rejoice: Firefly is returning to basic cable — and Nathan Fillion has something to say about it.

The Science Channel has acquired the rights to the cult-hit and will air the series in its short-lived entirety, plus some new extras. Science Channel will wrap each episode with interstitial segments starring renowned physicist Dr. Michio Kaku, who will discuss the theoretical science behind the show’s sci-fi concepts.

According to Firefly studio 20th Century Fox, this will mark the first time Firefly has aired on a fully distributed basic cable channel since 2008, when it ran on USA Network.

In honor of this occasion, star Nathan Fillion took a brief break from shooting ABC’s Castle today to jump on the phone and answer five Firefly questions — including whether he’d ever reprise the role of Captain Mal again. That interview and more details about Science Channel’s Firefly plans below:

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was the part about playing the character?
NATHAN FILLION: It was my favorite job ever. What wasn’t great about it? I got to wear a low-slung holster. I got to ride horses. I got to have a spaceship. I got to act mean and curmudgeonly. [Creator Joss Whedon] is really good at kicking characters in the nuts so the other characters would have laughs at my expense and that was great too.

If Castle had its series finale tomorrow and Fox said to you and Joss: “We screwed up, let’s try doing Firefly again.” Would you do it?
Yes. Yes. I would examine very closely Fox’s reasoning — I’m a little gun-shy. If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it on my own, and distribute it on the Internet.

What’s the most common thing Firefly fans say to you?
No. 1, “Is there going to be more?” No. 2, “Why was it canceled?”

Why do you think the show has had such an enduring appeal?
It’s a great question. We’re the most story-literate society the world has ever seen. What Joss tends to do is twist story conventions into reality. Whereas the story goes like this, real life goes like this, and that’s what Joss has mastered.

Do you ever watch the show nowadays or is that just weird?
It’s not weird. I haven’t watched it in a long, long time and I would like to revisit it.

Firefly premieres on Science Channel on March 6 at 8 p.m., with the two hour pilot, followed by the first episode at 10 p.m. Following that, Firefly episodes will air every Sunday — and, yes, in their original intended order and upgraded to high definition.

Does acquiring the rights to it mean they're just allowed to air it or does it mean they can also re-create it?

So what do we do if we don't like Firefly?

Screeling, it depends on the rights, and on that note, the article wasn't specific.

I'm intrigued by the notion that he would revisit the role.

Jewel Staite and Adam Baldwin have both recently come off their ongoing post-Firefly gigs. If we assume The Cape is headed for the scrap pile, Summer Glau frees back up again. Sean Maher hasn't had anything ongoing that he wouldn't give up for a return to Firefly since. I don't think Gina Torres is currently tied down with anything. I think that leaves just V and Castle as obstacles to future projects provided the license and interest is there.

Time for what? Re-air! Wooooo.... Oh wait, I have the series on DVD. I think he ended the series well with Serenity. And since the show was canceled after the first season, there wasn't enough time to ruin the show and go on for a few years too many. I enjoy what we got.

Really? Chuck appears to still be going strong, based on NBC's recent request for 11 more episodes of season 4 (which aren't finished yet).

I haven't been watching this season, but it's my understanding that

Spoiler:
Casey got killed off.

Haha, your bait is one of the best foils for Chuck getting killed off? Heck, I started watching Chuck partially because a man named Jayne was in the cast. :)

I don't know, doesn't really seem worth it to re-air a show that only has, what, 12 episodes? I'd imagine most people who care have seen it by now, or own the DVDs.

The additional commentary will be interesting to watch, though. That's the reason Science bought it.

You'll note it was the Science Channel, not Syfy. Now go re-read who will be offering the commentary. And it makes sense.

I'd love to watch more shows... but, I agree that the show wrapped up very well.

I mean, imagine if they tried to make a sequel to other wrapped up stories, like Tron or The Last Crusade.

Sometimes you have to let it go.

While the rebroadcast will be cool, I'm having a hard time getting excited over there.

The chances of all of the original cast and Joss getting back together and starting up Firefly again are basically zero. Doing it without the original cast and Joss would not be the same show. Actually I'm not sure you could really pick the show up again and have it work.

Sadly, the Firefly ship has sailed.

Really thinking about it... I have to agree.

After the events in the movie... too much has transpired for it to ever really become a cohesive show again.

Firefly as we knew it isn't ressurectable.

The universe itself holds promise, but I think Whedon has lost interest in that particular story chest.

I imagine he got to tell the story he wanted. Although, not all the parts. There was a TPB that I saw recently that explained what the deal was with Book. That was the only plot thread that the movie/series never got to.

Tell that to Anime each series has OVA, TV episodes and "movies" lol
