So, with the interest in the new "Home and Garden" forum, I had thought it might be nice to collapse some of the less used forums into "subforums" of general. The only usual complaint about adding new forums is that they clutter the main page, and this makes them accessible but makes the main index look a bit cleaner. Here is my proposal for the new design:

General
    Food
    Home and Garden
    Health and Fitness
    Sports
Entertainment
Gaming
    World of Warcraft
    Everquest
Science and Technology
Rants and Raves
Hellfire
    Heckfire

As with the two subforums in "Gaming", the new subforums would be accessible through the main index, but wouldn't take up a whole forum tagline on their own. I'd also like to expand the tagline on Tech to "Science and Technology" as that's a more apt description of the discussions there.

Thoughts? Likes, Dislikes?

Our main forums are General, Gaming, Entertainment, Rants and Raves and Heckfire... With Tech being a long standing but low post generating holdout, although I'd be fine with placing it as a subforum to General as well. This keeps them as the main forums, with subforums to collect more specific discussions... And honestly, Heckfire is really a subset of Hellfire anyway.

My only objection is that unread posts in subforums mark the parent forum as having unread items on the main index. I deal with it on Gaming with the WoW forum without much complaint, because I just click over to it and mark forum read after opening threads in Gaming itself. But having multiples that I don't read under General would throw a wrench in my browsing habits.

Play by post is already at the bottom of the page and opted out by default. So I don't know why/how it needs hidden more.

Additionally, I think the micromanagement of this board is overrated. It seems to be only a couple people who really care.

Yup, I've got the same issue as Kaffis, it might be a bit OCD of me, but I like to have all the forums "read".

There's nothing wrong with how it is now and we don't need more sub forums. Jesus **** Christ, people.

A solution to this would be to put them under something other than General- "Living the Good Life", maybe? Then it wouldn't show the General forum as having unread posts ::shrugs::.

Raltar: We obviously have people that want these forums (see the poll in Oonaghs post, and Vlad and Hopwin's arguments there). That said, we're trying to come up with a way that can let them have subforums without disrupting the overall experience from those that would prefer a few simple forums.

As I've said, I really don't care one way or another- I use the "View New Posts" as my default viewing style, and use the Mark All Forums Read button every time when I get ready to leave.

This post explains how to show/not show the PBP forums- basically, it's a user group thing.

Just like the Moderation forums not showing up if you aren't in the moderator user group.

I really don't see what the big deal is with how it is, burying forums just makes browsing more of a pain cause it adds a bunch of extra clicks, and even on my UMPC with only a 1024x600 res I don't look at these boards and go OMG, too much vertical scrolling.

I'm of the opinion we already have *way* to many forums / subforums, but I believe I'm in the minority there.

How does burying forums add any extra clicks? Subforums all appear on the main screen, just like they do now... Just listed horizontal instead of vertical.

I am of this opinion as well. Food, technology and the health forums are all rather underused and pointless. Sports is too, but I'd prefer to keep that one so I don't click on general or entertainment only to find sports threads there.

If the issue Kaffis described can't be worked out, I vote hellz no. It drives me crazy that I can't mark the Gaming forum read without having to go into the stupid WoW forum to mark it read as well.

I had no idea this was such a polarizing issue.

All of this is irrelevant without the Dr. Doom is Our Lord and Savior Forum.

I like it. I guess I have to say that being a teacher. I have all me files organized and subfiles (if that is even a word) etc.
This really makes it seem much more organized, but i can see why so many people may not like it with the "not read" thing.

Sorry. Didn't mean to start all this commotion.

I gave up on trying to keep all topics/forums read a long time ago.

I just keep up with the threads that I am interested in and it doesn't bother me in the least if there are pages and pages of unread topics anymore.

I have the Kaffissue. But I agree with Sas.

I would like if therr were more user options to hide certain forums/subforums by default.

I read gaming, but could care less about EQ. "Banish the forum from my sight" kind of thing

I think it's a good idea, but I don't really care if it gets done or not. I'm not that particular about forum arrangements.
