I have not. But I would imagine that they would at least make the trailers look interesting to draw in people that haven't read the series. Yet, they have failed to do that.

It's challenging to represent the characters to strangers in a two minute spot, yeah. The reason we're getting worked up about it is because we already know the characters, and are pleased at how they're translating in scenes we're familiar with. So we've got a bunch of context already for these little delicious snippets to fall into.

The strength of the series is in the characters. That and the realism it has, which is something of a relief from normal fantasy -- foolhardiness in many books would lead to an embarrassing situation another character must save someone from. In A Song of Ice and Fire, it would simply get the character killed. This leads to a real sense of tension for almost every character, where in most series you expect all characters to come through no matter how impossible the odds. Maybe the main char's friend would die at the end. But you know things are going to turn out well overall.

There are some other cool things about it -- magic/fantasy elements aren't mundane like in many fantasy worlds (even those where it's supposed to be special, like Wheel of Time, it ends up commonplace for the readers at least.) These elements are rare to begin with, and treated almost like they would be in the real world. The plot, at least through the first few books (I think it may change by the end of the series...) is extremely varied. Many fantasy books establish an overarching "save the world" plot from the get go... but the events of every book in print so far have nothing to do with that, so you never know where you'll end up by the end of the book.

I could go on, I suppose... and the first 10 words in this post can have a post, or a thread even, all to itself. But ultimately, none of the above really translate well into trailers.

In fact, my one concern about the TV show is that it isn't gripping enough from the first episode. With the public at large stick around til they really get invested in the characters and realize this isn't just a typical fantasy show? How many episodes is that even going to take? We shall see... but reviews from people in the TV industry (not fantasy fans) that have seen pre-showings have all loved the show.

Noggel, HBO's got a pretty decent track record for letting a series mature. I think the worst thing they've done was cut off Deadwood, but that was after.. 3 seasons? And it would only have done a 4th, regardless.

So I don't think we'll have serious issues with "the first episode wasn't gripping enough, so the series is doomed."

Besides, I'm seeing a lot of news sources billing it as "The Sopranos with swords," which I think is an adequate primer for the public at large's expectations for both what it should deliver, and what kind of build time it'll take.

Hmm, hopefully so! I know HBO thinks fondly of the series... they haven't greenlit season 2 yet but some of the words they use indicate it's going to happen. I just worry more about the public investing enough time to really appreciate it... even typing that out makes it seem a bit much to ask. So I'm mostly interested in how fast the series will do that. I know I liked Tyrion a lot just a few chapters into the first book, with his scene outside the banquet with Jon. I don't really like the Dany stuff at the beginning... I think Martin was pushing the envelope a bit on purpose at the beginning with a lot of that.

Hopefully viewers will stick with it for a few episodes. I don't know if they can do a whole lot in just one or two episodes to make it special, but we'll see.

Meh. Eff DEADWOOD. CARNIVALE got canned after only two seasons, out of a meticulously-planned six. :(

I wish Rome would have had more seasons. It ended well enough, but I really, really loved that show.

Did they manage to wrap it up, or did it just end with everything unresolved? I've considered checking that series out, but I don't want to end up frustrated and unsatisfied because of an abrupt, incomplete ending.

It was structured as three two-season "books." There was obviously more story to be told, but it was, as you'd expect, rather like the end of one section of a trilogy.

I just saw a bus-side billboard, or maybe a regular one, with that image of Sean Bean on the throne. I had no clue this is what you guys were talking about.

Since I don't get HBO, however, I'll have to wait until it gets Netflixed. Which I'm sure will be years.

Delightful.

/obNitpick: Arya can't shoot a bow. She asks Anguy to teach her when Beric's men capture her.

Minor discrepancies to come later aside, though, I'll let it slide because it's a good character moment.

Looked pretty cool! I'm torn on whether to watch it episode by episode, or wait for the season to conclude so I can watch in groups.

How many episodes is GoT going to be?

Just double-checked for this and the other thread... 10 episodes in total for the first season. I believe they are hour-long episodes, with no commercials due to being on a paid subscription network.

edit: Just wanted to add that with the pilot date fast approaching, a LOT of media folks have had an opportunity to watch some early for review purposes. Even among the non-fantasy base, there have been a lot of pretty great reviews.

One of the authors behind the fan site (http://winter-is-coming.net/) I have kept my eyes on religiously the past month or two got to see the first episode. He didn't include spoilers, so I'll include it here, as I think it will be the most relevant sort of review for us Gladers:

Quote:
Mine eyes have seen the glory…

Last night, I watched the first episode of Game of Thrones. We will of course have full, in-depth reviews once the show begins airing, but I wanted to share my initial thoughts and impressions after watching the first 62 minutes of this, hopefully, long-running series.

My first thought, as I tweeted, was they actually did it. They made A Song of Ice and Fire into a TV series. I was literally smiling throughout much of the episode, because it was so amazing to see the books come to life on screen. I’ve waited two and half years for this moment, hoping the show would be as good as I know it could be. And it is!

What David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have done is taken George R. R. Martin’s work and made it their own. There are changes, yes, but they are made to enhance the story, not detract from it or alter it. Translating the books page-for-page would have been a mistake and David & Dan realized that. They have taken the source material and set about retelling the story, but for a different medium. Add a scene here, condense some dialogue there, but the major beats of the story are present. The closest analogy really is what Peter Jackson did with Lord of the Rings.

Some purists might complain. The prologue is changed, Dany’s wedding night plays out differently, Catelyn’s motivations are altered, there are the, now well-known, aesthetic and design differences. But to me these are minor quibbles and didn’t detract from the experience. If you let these minor things get to you, you are missing out on a great adaptation. Because, really, it could have been a LOT worse.

The thing I loved was the new scenes, most of which served as introductions to the characters and storylines. Hewing exactly to the book in this regard would not have worked for TV, so these new scenes were necessary. And they felt completely natural. Almost like watching “deleted scenes” from the book. My favorite of these is how they establish Arya’s character without giving her a word of dialogue. Great job by David and Dan.

Overall, it just works. The pacing is good. A lot is set-up but it is done efficiently and I think it will both inform new viewers while hooking them. (And that ending will help too.) The characters are all familiar and true to their book counterparts. There are no Arwen situtions. It’s hard to judge performances this early on, but if I had to pick some stand-outs from episode one I would say Peter Dinklage, Mark Addy and Harry Lloyd. All the performances were good though. I’m less concerned about some of our early acting worries; Sophie does well as Sansa and Headey plays Cersei true to the books, as a cold *****. The sets look amazing, of course. They really captured Winterfell. It also seemed to have more color than it did in some of the previews, which is good. The effects are well-done. The music (assuming it is final) is fine, subtle but not overpowering.

As a fan of the book, I think you will enjoy the new scenes most, especially the not-so-subtle nods by David & Dan to future events. Assuming you are not one to nitpick, I think you will really love this adaptation. It is just so rich and detailed that the few minor changes don’t bother me in the slightest. You can really tell that this adaptation was handled by folks who really love and understand the books, but also understand how to write for film and TV. Myles McNutt has taken to calling it a “love letter” to the books, which I think is an apt description.

Well I could go on, but I’ve probably said too much as it is and I really don’t want to spoil it all for you guys. We are only two weeks away from the whole world getting to experience this show. And I am more hyped than ever. Now to watch episode two…

F*ck "A Song of Ice and Fire" made into a TV series, I want it made into a complete book series. Also, I would appreciate it if they'd stop re-doing cover art before a goddamn series is finished.

Yes, and yes.

My biggest hope for the HBO series is that it does well, and HBO goes to Martin and says "Great, we'd like to renew it for 7 more seasons. What do you mean you haven't written past 5? Get cracking!" and lights a fire under his ***.

My biggest fear is that we'll be cursed with cover art for upcoming books that use photos or art that hews annoyingly close to the actors and is splattered with "As seen on HBO!"

Already seen a new edition of the first book with Sean Bean on the cover at the Books-a-Million here.

You know, as heretical as that is, I think it's a worthwhile price to pay for the series.

If the series does well and continues on (at this point I'm expecting season 2 will happen, but unsure past then) we will have to deal with more and more books with actors on the cover. They probably won't be the default covers anyway, so we can buy the good ones! I hope.

If the show proves to not be as profitable as they hope, and they cancel it for some new show, then we at least get to see the series remain Unsullied (har!) in the future, at least.

Of those two options, I'd rather see the former. But yeah...

Shouldn't Lord of the Rings be a good real world example to look to as far as this goes? I admit I don't really know about Lord of the Rings books post-trilogy. The only bookstore within ~45 minutes of me closed a bunch of years back, and to be honest I didn't really go there much once I was moving around the state for college anyway.

LotR isn't a good point to extrapolate from, imo. It's got a history of seeing numerous reprints over 50 years prior to being opened up for potential defacement in such a manner. So when the inevitable offensive movie tie-in cover comes out, you can not only probably still get another one, but you can rest fairly sure that there will be more appealing ones in the future, too.

In addition, LotR doesn't have new volumes to come.

My worst fear is that A Dance for Dragons will come out in its first printing in an awful format.

It doesn't help, of course, that I think I'm missing my copy of A Game of Thrones. My suspicion is that I lent it out and it failed to come back to me.

What does it matter what's on the cover? As long as the stuff inside is unsullied by a big watermark of Sean Bean (oh god... the horror) I couldn't care less what the cover looks like. Besides, it'll all go on my Kindle anyway. Paper books are for chumps now ;)
