So, went to the midnight release. Picked up my copy. Came home and installed it, and registered for my DLC items. Also downloaded the Hi-res texture pack. And now I'm ready to play....

Except, I can't. The game has a "Release Date Check" program that it runs to make sure the game is not leaked early. And I can't play it for 2 more hours.

WTF?!?!?! And they wonder why people pirate games. This is some serious Bullshit. I've paid for my copy, months in advance. Waited patiently for the release date, even though it's been available on torrent sites for over a week now. But NO, I can't play my copy, because they wanna treat me like a frakkin' criminal.

I'm seriously tempted to take it back for a full refund now, and play the frakkin' pirated version. I'm seriously pissed off right now....

For some reason I preordered DA2 from amazon.com. I don't know why I keep ordering/preordering games online, they never get here anywhere near release day.

So did I, as I do virtually every game. It's out for delivery right now, as it had free release-day arrival as a shipping option.

Is this one of those games you need to play the first one before you play the second one?

I dunno. It looks the same to me, but I can't be sure.

You shouldn't need to play the first one to enjoy this one. Events may be mentioned about the first one and there are a few returning characters, but the events of Dragon Age 2 take place in a different part of the world with a different main character.

You don't HAVE to, but I would strongly recommend it. There are things that happen or that are referenced in this game that have very strong ties to the first. It helps to know what's going on. Also, if you import a save from the first game, then the decisions you made there can be reflected in this one.

And not only that, but Dragon Age: Origins is a frakkin' fantastic game, anyway. You'd really be missing out if you didn't play that one.

Promised myself I'd finish the first one, its expansion & the DLC's before I buy this one. Will see if I actually stick to it.

No, you haven't been able to get it from torrent sites for a week now. Sure, the CD content is up there, but I can say with 100% certainty that the release date check was still intact on them and is pretty much uncrackable. The DVD doesn't have a fully-functioning executable, it has to download parts of it from Bioware to run the game at all, which means it can't be cracked before March 8th and the crackers actually have the real .exe to start working on.

Really? Then I suppose the crack that I downloaded last night after making my post, that allowed me to play without going thru the release checker program was all a figment of my imagination. Ahh, that explains it.

Not sure where you heard this, but the crack I got was working fine. It is a fully functional .exe file that it installs. It only has to periodically check with the EA site to verify that you are using a legit copy. Kinda like how steam works. But I can assure you, that the crack worked just fine for me. Which just goes to show how absurd these DRM protection schemes are. They only hurt or affect the paying customers.

There were full versions of the game and working cracks up two days ago.

Anyone who ever says something is "uncrackable" is smoking something. The scene groups cracking and distributing this stuff are hundreds of times more talented, competent, and numerous than the idiots trying to protect it. All DRM fails miserably, and only inconveniences the legitimate buyers.

I've been playing since I got home and I've got to say...very awesome so far. I'm playing a humorous/charming male Hawke. Rogue specializing in archery.

While I get your point and don't really disagree, this strikes me as akin to saying that an alleyway gang with crowbars are 'hundreds of times more talented competent and numerous' than the ballerina whose legs they break.

I mean, its true - at breaking legs, they're 'better' than her ability to stop them. But its a big stretch to use all those descriptives in such a positive way when comparing them to people who actually are talented, competent and produce entertainment consumed happily by millions.

In fact, I am not even sure its about relative talent or competence at all - the basis on which modern PC's run makes the position of defender tough, when your attacker has to be given a complete copy of the work to access it, and has 100% control of the environment in which it runs. Its like blaming the ballerina for not being 20 people strong, and armed with a machete at all times.

Only about an hour or so in. I do not like the combat. Too button mashy. Other than that, seems fine so far.

I'm not. The people who design and code the game aren't the same people who design and code the DRM. Usually it's not even the same company.

I take it the demo isnt representative of the game? The story in it is immensely... disjointed. They're just lifting scenes to show differing areas?

Finding a Sister's remains randomly in a cave, which started a quest to turn them into the Chantry, which when done so prompted a 50 silver reward and a comment of "I never thought I'd see THESE again!", kinda made me chuckle and scratch my head.

Overall I like the game, and think it's improved over the first (which I haven't been able to make myself finish yet), but there's a few annoyances which really are bugging me.

The one big one is the reusable terrain. I know that concept isn't new (WoW does it, as does the Bethesda games, etc), but the repetition of it is kind of extreme here...and I just might be overly sensitive to it because I'm the kind of person who's spent thousands of dollars on stuff for D&D to avoid generic, repeated terrain as much as I can.

I installed last night in the PC. Game runs very choppy, and seems to have slowed down, so the voices seem to echo and drawl. Odd, because the machine I'm running on should run it very well. I haven't had a chance to play around with new video drivers, or direct X 9 / 11 yet. I'm hoping I can get it sorted quickly and not regret going PC instead of 360.

Try disabling the "Upload Gameplay Feedback" and "Upload Profile" options. Lots of people have been experiencing lag/slow down because of those. Also, are you running in DX 11? I read somewhere that they made some changes to the engine that should increase performance, but only if you are running in DX 11. I've got a very modest rig, and I'm not having any problems @ 1920 X 1080, with High settings, and 4X AA.

I installed it last night and it also lags a bit on my rig (not much, mainly noticeable on quick turns), but I've got the settings on very high, 1920x1080, downloaded the HQ texture pack, 4x AA and 16x AF with the extra effects.

Using two HD 5770's in Crossfire. Will update drivers when I get home and see if new ones improve performance at all.

I was planning to update the drivers when I get home too. I'll look into the upload settings as well, Thanks Caleria.

I saw a post on the forums saying to use beta drivers for your video cards to get the best performance. Or maybe it said to not use the beta drivers. Hmmm...

Here's the thread. It had a different name yesterday: http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic ... ex/6420212
