I see the iPad as a media viewer. Books, movies, web browsing, etc. I think it's probably capable of replacing 75% of what I personally do with a computer, but only 10% of what I do professionally.

When they come out with one with a 'retina' like display I'll get one. I figure that's only a matter of time... like the iPhone, the first really good hardware spec came out with the 3rd generation.

I found a cool toy that seriously had me considering mashing the 'BUY ME' button.

http://www.sonomawireworks.com/guitarjack/

Unfortunately, it's not compatible with the iPad (or 4th gen iPod touch).

Just my luck...

They're coming out with Garageband for the iPad... Maybe that will help you with some of your music interests.

My cat ignores balls of paper. And the laser pointer requires me to be paying attention. (I also try not to over-use it, lest he get bored of it)

He does, however, like a dangling shoelace, though that also requires attention. I think my favorite "give it to him to amuse himself" toy I've found for him is the one that's a little hollow ball you can put a few treats in, and they fall out occasionally as he rolls it around. Can't use that one too much, either, obviously.

Unless I used that with normal kibble as his routine feeding mechanism.. hrm...

You need not pay attention to the cat laser anymore!

Not an option. I didn't 'buy' it... Long story, but lets just say it's a 'test device'... =)

To be clear, I would not have paid real money for any tablet. I just can't see the value considering the price.

I was about to order one for my Sister until I read the comments on Amazon. It didn't rate too highly.

I was particularly keen to the comment that suggested that the thing makes odd noises that attract the cats attention, causing them to want to look directly into the laser.

Yeah, it also looked like a lot of people in the comments on Amazon had issues with reading the instructions. Not too smart. The review on a pet site I read said they just redirected the cats away from the toy a few times (when they went looking for the source of the laser) and didn't have any issues after that. Regardless, I'll still supervise my cat playing with it, just to be safe.

Update: this thing is awesome. The biggest problem with it is when it turns off, my cat harasses me until I turn it back on for her!

Speaking as someone who just got an iPad yesterday (1st gen), I'm really enjoying it. It's great for forum/web browsing, news readers, and videos on YouTube/Netflix. Aside from that, the main things I'll be using it for will be taking notes and drawing, sort of like a journal or sketchpad. Of course, I'll be getting a stylus for this, but I've already got Notes Plus and Sketchbook pro for mine. Those are some seriously good apps, especially when paired with a good stylus.

Check out Notes Plus:

And Sketchbook Pro:

Maybe this will get me to actually start drawing again.

I also picked up everyair. That looks really cool, and I'm looking forward to trying that out soon. Thanks for the link, Lenas.

Yeah, I just got my 1st Gen yesterday and love it (16gb wifi).

When combined with dropbox and a few good document readers, it means I can access all of my work files pretty much anywhere.

I need to pick up a stylus and VGA adapter with it... I'm going to try to use it to present tomorrow, I'll see how that goes. Should be a nice experience overall.

I'm not taking it many places until my case arrives, but that should increase it's utility for me a lot.

The onscreen keyboard was a pain at first, but I'm getting used to it... Will probably still pick up a bluetooth keyboard for it as well, however.

I can see taking my laptop very few places now- mostly just when I'm traveling and need a solid computer. My desktop and iPad should take care of most everything else.

Caleria: I've had Notetaker HD recommended to me by a lot of people... As well as Goodreader for a general document reader. Dropbox is a must as far as I'm concerned, as well.

Yea, I've got dropbox. Heard good things about goodreader, too. I debated between notes plus & note taker HD. They are both excellent. In the end the "shape detection" and recording audio that syncs with your notes won out, for me (though admittedly, I'm not sure that these aren't included in the latest version of Note Taker HD). I could see that being VERY useful for meetings/lectures/brainstorming. I really don't think you could go wrong with either program, though.

I'm also digging dropbox. It works great and has a web and android client. I'm just annoyed to no end that I need it at all. I should be able to drag and drop files to this thing without all of the hassle.

I installed Goodreader as well.

At work I've gotten some use out of Infinite Whiteboard.

As far as a note taking device for work, it won't be feasible as long as it's such a pain in the *** to get the notes off of the device.

That's where EverNote comes in. I've been using this for my iPhone & PC for almost 3 years now and I LOVE it! I know both notes plus and note taker HD were working on being able to save directly to EverNote. Not sure if they both have it yet, but you can certainly email the notes as a PDF to your EverNote email addy. And its available to all your mobile devices,or any device that has web access.

The best thing about EverNote is that anything added to it becomes searchable, including images. So you can take pictures of business cards or whiteboards after meetings, and then search for keywords IN that image later. It's really, really cool. And it's free. I highly recommend it.

It works fine for me mostly because I don't *want* separate copies of documents on my iPad. If I annotate it, I want it to upload and replace the parent document.

Doing this with all my work files really simplifies using them on three different devices.

Unfortunately, at least for me, corporate security frowns on those who put sensitive company documents on public servers (it's a little vague on handsets and other devices, which is why I can even have an iPad at work). Pretty much everything I do involves sensitive documentation.

We had a security incident a few years back where someone claimed to have hacked our network and stolen sensitive information.

After an investigation, it was determined there was no network compromise. Someone had just found a Project Manager's spreadsheet on a public server (possibly a hacked gmail account, etc...) somewhere and claimed he hacked our network to get it.

Maybe the new overlords won't care as much. :P

I'm looking forward to the new Adobe Photoshop app, myself. They're adding in the ability to work in layers, which is missing in the current version.

Very cool!

http://www.148apps.com/news/adobe-annou ... apps-ipad/

Quote:
Adobe has announced some new Photoshop apps for the iPad that are designed as tools for Photoshop CS5, to help extend the functionality of the computer program by using your iPad for a variety of different functions.

Adobe Eazel is a painting app, designed to let users paint on the entire iPad screen, using their fingers or a stylus to paint on there. I say the word paint specifically, as it is designed to simulate painting on an actual canvas, as the lines you paint dry on the screen, and you can paint over previous strokes, and watch as the paint bleeds and the colors mix. The app comes with a five finger user interface that is designed to let you access all the app’s features without any kind of traditional menu access. As the interface’s creator, Dan Marcolina, puts it: “We put the most commonly used tools on your most usable fingers. So you control color with your index finger, brush size with your middle finger, and opacity with your ring finger. You access settings with your pinky finger. Your thumb flicks to undo or redo, and it slides to erase.” The app allows you to export your work to Photoshop CS5 directly, or to share your work via email.

Adobe Nav is a tool for Photoshop CS5 that lets you access tools and interact with Photoshop directly from your iPad, wirelessly connected to your computer. You get an editable screen with up to 16 icons, that you can select on the iPad to then use on your computer’s version of Photoshop. You can also view and select your open documents from Adobe Nav.

Adobe Color Lava is designed for simulated color paint mixing, allowing you to mix around paint to create interesting colors in a realistic way. You can then get and modify the RGB or HSB values of he color you’ve created. Featuring wifi connectivity similar to the other 2 apps, you can use the app to change the color in your version of Photoshop CS5. As well, the app works as a dashboard of various colors, that you can use and switch to on demand.

While it’s unknown what, if any, relation this has to the app that was shown off recently at Photoshop World, these tools should help make the iPad a better tool for Photoshop users. No release date or price has been announced for the apps, although Adobe has a link to let you be notified when the apps are available from their mobile products page.

So, if anyone has an iPad... I'd recommend at least trying Infinity Blade. It's fairly repetitive, but an interesting concept- and awesome graphics.

I'm not terribly impressed with dropbox (that may just be a result of not having much use for it), and the free notes app I downloaded to write with a stylus as if the ipad were a sheet of paper isn't all that great. Is Notes Plus, or some other paid note app that much better to justify spending money?

I use NoteTaker, and I find I can write about as fluently as I can with a pad and paper.

Dropbox and it's utility depends on your usage. For me, I work between two desktops, a laptop, and my iPad... And I want my documents to keep revisions I make on any of those devices.

Not only does it sync all my work files between computers, but it keeps them backed up on the cloud.

For collaborative projects, you can make a shared folder and keep all documents related to that project in one place, where anyone that has access can get to them and edit them.
