I haven't tried this yet, but I've read people are reluctant to post jailbreaks for 3.60 due to GeoHot's legal battles. (Contrary to some rumors about 'improved security' on 3.60, once the hardware root key is cracked, you cannot ever fix security short of changing the physical hardware, so 3.6 wouldn't be any harder to crack than 3.5 was.)

I've long wanted to jailbreak mine to turn it into an actually competent media-player box -- is this still even possible?

Are you already actually updated to 3.6, or are you still on 3.41/3.55/3.56?

I'm on 3.56.

You're SOL. Can't downgrade from 3.56 or 3.60 yet.

well, "downgrading" isn't much of an option, anyway. That still rules out PSN and therefore netflix and online LBP playing. What is needed is a cracked firmware that identifies as 3.60.

I could be wrong but I don't think you'll get many features from a new and small hacking community that's somewhat on the run.

Well, not being able to downgrade means you can't jailbreak, means you can't install any home brew, means you're SOL. Also, downgrading does not affect whether or not you can connect to PSN. I'm on 3.55 and things are going just fine.

Doesn't matter anyway, no one has ported any video libraries to the PS3. Media playback remains the same as it always was: use PS3 Media Server :[ All of the developers are wasting their time making emulator upgrades or backup managers, no one is making useful homebrew like media playback applications. I don't know if it's a limitation of system resources, knowledge, or a combination of both.

Meh. PS3 doesn't handle video streams well...and that's even assuming they don't have that Cinavia crap built into the audiostream. Notebook with a hardware video decoder and an HDMI cable works better.

there is a few APP's that will steam anything to your PS3, tversity being 1, which is Free, I get much better results over my 360 than my PS3 (http://www.tversity.com) it severly bogs down your PC though when running, since upgrading from my core2duo to my I7 I can play dragon age 2 and stream via Tversity without really having any negative affects, previously just running Tveristy pegged me about 80% as the PC is decoding on the fly.

There is also jamcast (which is not free), I havent used jamcast much besides the free trial, I like my free option tversity much better. Tversity with CCCP (combined community codect pack) will play anything on PS3 or 360, be it mkv, mp4, flv, mov, quicktime etc.. premium (pay) version of Tversity also has support for like Hulu Youtube etc..

since the latest upgrade, I dont have to let it buffer for very long

Kashan,

Are you transcoding on the fly with tversity? or just streaming them as-is?

I haven't played with tversity in years, but when I was using it a few years back, pre-transcoding the videos saved a lot of CPU, and improved performance overall, at the cost of extra storage space.

When I was streaming from my PC to my PS3 a lot, I always converted my .mkv files using Mkv2Vob before I'd play them. Greatly decreased buffering and increased compatibility. Only downside was the lack of subtitle support.

Im usually transcoding on the fly especially now with a TV connected to my PC, 99% of my tv shows are mkv's downloaded from tvtorrent's. However, upscaling to 1080p, really bogs my CPU down hardcore, thus I keep them at native resolution (720P usually) and runs fine while gaming, surfing the net etc..

On my core2duo, that was probably 3 or 4 generations of Tversity ago as well, so maybe they optimized it for multiple cores since then, need to get a new GPU and test it again, as I want a dedicated Media server.

Your the one that got me using it many years ago on glad incarnation XX? :) it has been greatly improved upon in the last couple years, buffering runs much better, couple years ago for Chuck 42 minute show minus commercial would take about 10 minutes buffering, now I just load and play, occasionaly lip synch does get a little out of whack, but not very often.

And yes as Lenas pointed out, Subtitles dont play well with streaming at least Tversity, but I dont bother with Subtitles.

Link to CCCP for anyone intrested in TVersity, IMHO one of the best codec packs out there

KakARoToKS and graf_chokolo (two of the big PS3 hackers) did come out and say that 3.6 closed the security hole making it once again secure.

KakARoToKS said something about the people who like homebrew staying at 3.55 now. (I kinda have been following it, because I'd considered keeping one PS3 at 3.55 while upgrading the other).

Quote:
According to KakARoToKS, Sony has completely removed all the loaders that were being used for piracy and have bypassed metldr, which was used by the hackers.

He writes, “Wow, in 3.60, Sony removed all the loaders, no more isoldr/lv1ldr/lv2ldr/appldr.. but they added lv0.2! Seems they found a way to secure ps3.”

Even with the original exploit shut down though, I imagine eventually another will be found, but apparently they'll have to start from scratch.

Heh, and if anyone is interested, how the PS3 got resecured...

...the root key that was found and released that unlocks everything? Sony simply disabled it and stopped using it altogether.

I'd say 5-10% chance of this happening.

Two separate people have already made claims to hacking 3.60, one of whom was among the first to hack the system.

Sorry Lex.

afaik, the general consensus is that the 3.60 jailbreak claim is faked. Still wouldn't be surprised if it did happen though (or will soon).

It does/did have to be done from scratch though, as the old security flaw is permanently closed.

Hackers can be a fickle bunch. I believe an exploit for 3.60 exists, though I'm not confident the creators of it will roll it into a package for the masses.

Oh, conveniently, someone released a PS3 Media Center homebrew app yesterday which is reported to have good MKV and AC3 support. I haven't tried it yet but I definitely will give it a shot. Sorry though Taly, you're still outta luck until someone does something about 3.56.

Still in beta, obviously.

Also, this is a signed package, so any of you that are on 3.55 still can actually install this without having a hacked system. Anyone on an even lower firmware version, down to 3.41 I think, can download the files and sign them for whatever firmware version you've got following a fairly simple tutorial.

Hackers: providing more support to Sony's system in a few months than Sony has done since launch.
