The Glade 4.0

Thought it might be cool to see if anyone had any interesting ancestry information about their family they would like to share. Any royalty on the glade?

As an example when I was doing some genealogy research on my dad's side I found this tidbit:

One of my ancestors (I will have to go back and look up his name again) was one of the original 15 people that attended a meeting that led to the creation of the Mennonites. Later he was jailed for his beliefs, he then escaped from prison and after being recaptured was hung for the escape.

So now every time we visit Amish country I joke with my wife that they are my peeps. (Yes I know they are different but the Amish branched off from them)

I was never really into it that much until I started looking into it since I was bored one day. As I started going deeper I got more interested and was able to go back to the 1300's on my dads side. I learned some things I never knew before and it was really neat to see the path they took across time and how they ended up being here in Ohio.

So anyone else have any sordid ancestral history, or famous people or noble blood flowing through their veins?

My great grandfather was a professor at Trinity University, the official biographer of three popes and a few other religious celebrities of the time, and came over to America during the potato famine. Trinity wasn't able to meet payroll because so few students were going there. His cousin became an archbishop. They both worked on the early Irish Catholic community in Philadelphia, including helping start the (according to my father, who was known to stretch the truth, a lot) first catholic congregation in Philly.

My daughter is related to Samuel Clemens, through one of his siblings or cousins, not sure. Her mother's side.

From what I've been told, I come from a long line of teachers and bankers on dad's side. I really should have chosen one of those professions.

My mother's side had a lot of farmers and small shop-owners in it. Considering the country was 90% agricultural at the time they lived, this is not surprising.

I can only go back about 150 years before it gets lost in non-documented oral tradition.

Theoretically, my maternal grandmother's grandmother was a Cherokee princess, but that is part of the oral tradition.

Family is from Germany. The last guy there. The one who said to hell with this place, I am going to America was a guard at Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin. Guess that is the closest thing I have.

Kirra the easiest way to get started now days is to go to ancestry.com and see what is there already. It used to be a lot harder but a lot of the records (birth, census, military etc) are online now and a site like that makes it easy to find stuff. You can also hire a genealogist to do the leg work for you, which is what my family did years ago. The nice thing is you can then take that information and put it online and then others can build on it.

Lots of people like to research their families and after time you can start taking advantage of others research in your own. For example some of my distant relatives are related to the Firestone's so all of that family information folds into mine nicely.

I've got a couple things from my grandfather that trace my paternal line back to the 1600's or something.

It's not incredibly fascinating, though, because as best I can tell, 3 of the branches on my family tree go straight back to average people in Northern Europe (Scandinavia and the Netherlands) immediately before my grandparents, around the turn of the century.

So, no real family history legends. The only speculation is exactly what kind of mutt my grandmother was, as she's the only one to have deep roots here in America.

My great-Grandmother on my mom's side was a Chrysler. She was apparently disowned because she wouldn't give up her first born to her cousin (who couldn't have children).

There is the legend, on my Mom's side of the family, that we are related to Joseph Haydn.

My family is a bunch of-johnny-come-latelys.

We are currently fairly well represented in several town and state legislatures, in in several corporate board rooms.

Before that, but in the more recent past, I am related to two Catholic saints.

However, when traced back to our European roots, we were nothing more than highwaymen and robbers.

Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad are both in my ancestry, as well as multiple people with the names of norse gods, such as thor and odin.

My aunt is heavily into geneology, so we have tons of stuff. Dozens of towns in the west started by ancestors, some cool pioneer story stuff, and so on. I'm sure everyone really will have something that's cool in their histories somewhere.

I am the 27 great-grandaughter of King Macbeth of Scotland. You may have heard of him in a story. However the time periods were off. Macbeth lived long before he was ever written about by Shakespeare. He lived around 1040 where as the play was written around 1603. Duncan never died on a visit to Macbeth's home, oh and they are believed to be cousins. Duncan was killed by Macbeth in battle over a land dispute and Kingship. Malcolm III who was Duncan's son was a child when this happened and not an adult like in the story. Rumors say Macbeth was killed by Malcolm later in 1057 or by his own people, but Macbeth was actually succeeded by his stepson or son Lulach. Lulach was killed by Malcolm and he took the thrown in 1058. Which my blood line has also been traced back to Malcolm because of his kinship to Macbeth. Malcolm's second wife was St. Maragaret. So i'm HOLY as well related to a saint.

I had this extensive geneology done by a memeber of my grandfather's family from Ireland. Which we were known as the McFinley's in Scotland until moving to Ireland and just going with Finley.

I'm related to an arsonist in the 1400's who set fire to fields just before the harvest time and he was hung.

The lady who did this traced our roots back to 4years after the time of Christ. She has been doing this for over 25 years and found my grandfather's family when they immigrated here and contacted us.

Oh and Lady Macbeth, No wonder Shakespeare wrote her name as "Lady Macbeth" her first name was Gruoch.

A portion of my family came from Sweden to Delaware in 1638, and built a fort. My wife's family came from the Netherlands to the same area and built a fort. In 1651, my family arranged a friendly visit, and then took their fort. In 1655, they returned and my family was excused from the area.

I'm related to Pope Leo Egisheim (Pope Leo IX, 1002-1054) (I believe he is responsible for the celibacy rules), and through his family related to Emporer Conrad II.

I'm directly related to Robert the Bruce (Red Robert), the Stuarts (English kings), and the Wolf of Badenoch ( ).

My mother is a Daughter of the American Revolution.

I'm distantly related to Greg Evigan(by marriage) of B.J. and Bear fame.

I'm related to William H. Seward.

Dad's side was descendent of a Qing dynasty general.
Mum’s side was the brother of the first munchun queen, when they invaded and eventually took over the majority of China.

My great grand-uncle (grandpa's uncle) on my dad's side was Buffalo Bill Cody.
I had ancestors on both sides of the American Revolution.
Also on my dad's side, we may have been wealthy landowners in the Schwabian region of Germany - that, or the landscapers. My re-germanized last name means "keeper of lands" or something similar.

My kids are descended from two of the Mayflower pilgrims, on my wife's side of the family.

Geneology's cool stuffs.

Some very cool stuff. Those that don't think they have anything interesting I still think it is pretty cool even if they were ordinary people. Although I am surprised there isn't more royalty, the royal families bred like rabbits so usually you can find it somewhere in a lot of people history. And of course if you go back far enough everyone is pretty much related to everyone which makes all the issues people have across the world make sense (family gatherings anyone)

You're Irish right? You undoubtedly have Kings and Queens among your gene donors, we had a lot of them through the centuries, albeit for some very small Kingdoms.
