Okay, for Guardian, I consider the intro everything prior to the death Rift. (You're probably still there, actually, if you're level 6. I think Defiants can get out of the intro at level 6, but I've never seen Guardians do it before 7)

Defiants have a similar capstone climax to their intro area. Both are followed by a cutscene, I think, though I can't get a clear image of what the Defiant one's about, heheh.

And yeah, I know exactly where you were. You were by the encampment with the palisaded walls on the fields with the undead. Probably in the woods fighting the constructs and their handlers.

I *think* there's a named defiant there that can spawn on occasion. Which might have triggered a tutorial popup?

Nothing important, really.

The other possibility is that you might have spotted Orphiel, who spawns by a table on the right-hand (as you enter from town) edge of the forest. He's got a little scripted event where he shows up, says something, and runs off. I've never been able to kill him before he makes a break for it, though.

In that case, you saw a little lore-nugget cameo appearance of a guy you'll be seeing stuff about here and there, and who's an important figure in the historical sense. You can also pick up (or just read, I forget which) a note from that table to catch a bit of that lore.

Nitefox, I think that's unlikely, as he's still in the introduction; no rifts until the end and no zone-wide dynamic invasions.

I found this entry on the Wiki page that I think describes what happened.

http://telarapedia.com/wiki/Creature

Rift Wiki wrote:
Rare Creature

In each province there are a number of creatures classified as rare. When encountered and engaged, a specific in game message will pop up telling the player he or she has encountered a rare creature. It is unknown how often or in what location these creatures will be encountered. Rare creatures are also part of province specific acheivments a character may gain by defeating a proscribed number of different rare monsters in a given province.

It just happened so fast that I didn't get to read the message.

Ah, right. I didn't think there were any that counted in the intro, though, so I didn't think of that.

I did one quest where I planted an orb,and it started some kind of scripted event, where I was helping an NPC kill several mobs. After the last one died, the NPC I was helping just walked away and poofed. Other than completing the quest, there was nothing unusual about the loot, etc....

I got a late start last, and against my better judgement, kinda rushed through the content. I really should go back and re-do it, paying more attention. :p

You should. There's good stories on both sides in the introduction. It's really a rather nice, cohesive intro to the world.

And you can restart on Estrael. =P

Hi Guys,

I'm wondering if I would be able to play this game with an older PC with quad core 6600 @ 2.4ghz, 4gb ram, and a Nvidia 9600 GT with 512mb? I'm not looking for max but would this system be playable at all?

Thanks,

Welcome to the non-lurkerdom on the Glade, Korlic!

I play on a worse system (Dual Core 6600 and an 8800GTX) and play at 1920x1200 just fine. I turned shadowing off because it was torching my video card, but that's not unsurprising, it's been showing its age a bit for a year, year and a half now, and the shadowing quality is pretty good so I can't imagine it's too light on the system.

Welcome Korlic (how did you find us?).

Like Kaffis said, you should be able to play no problems with that setup. I believe the game automatically optimizes settings for your hardware. I just installed and and played, without giving the setup any consideration, and have only experienced lag a couple of times, and it was very brief, during a large encounter. My specs are similar, if only slightly better than what you and Kaffis are running.

Here are the official system requirements from the FAQ on their website:

riftgame.com FAQ wrote:

K, I can confirm this. I just got started in Gloomwood and a rare werewolf crossed my path. I got to kill it and loot a neck piece. Had a question mark pop up telling me rare creature and the such.

Thanks Kaffis and Midgen.

Haha yes I guess I'm a lurker. I didn't realize I have never posted before.

I actually go back to the original Glade. I played EQ1 back then and was on the Glade daily.

Well, I got to level 25 with my bard / bladedancer and I've come to my conclusion about this game.

It sucks. 15 days ago I might have thought this game had a chance to be something cool...I was wrong.

The class system is like the developers read the WoW class message board balance argument threads and then gave every player all the abilities and skills they wish their class had. They thought they'd make everyone happy, but instead every class you pick is a diversified amalgamation of suck.

This game feels like a generic bastardization of every popular MMO that has ever existed. It takes all of the great things that have ever existed in an MMO, makes them better, and puts them all into one game...and it succeeds.

The result? Deja vu.

I've played this game before...with different graphics, stats, and quest names.

Every stat, amount of money, or number of experience points gained is like WoW's launch stat/exp numbers multiplied by 1.3 to 1.5 to make everyone feel like they're advancing their character better than the last MMO they played.

This game has everything every MMO player wished they could have in an MMO, minus the fun. It's a mindless grind.

EDIT: Oh, Rifts and Invasions? I admit I had a fun time the first big boss mob I took out in an open group....but the novelty quickly wears off. Now, they're either an annoyance when you're trying to grind quest exp or way too boring and easy. The automatic public grouping system depersonalizes the communication w/ new people that was once fun in EverQuest when grouping. Oh, and if you want to group for a dungeon, there is no LFG tool. I dont mind spamming LFG, but I'm level 25 and I still have not been able to find a group. I almost found a group once, I asked someone if they'd want a bard...thinking I'd be a valued aoe heal and support class, and the 4-man group replied, "Sorry, we already have 2 DPS, 2 Healers, 3 CC, a puller and 9 tanks"

Huh, sorry you had a bad experience.

If you think your class selection sucks, then change it up. Frankly I've found the soul system to be one of the most appealing things about the game. I've messed around with a couple of different combos and have several that are just amazingly fun to play.

I'm actually boggled that you haven't been able to find a group and do an instance by lvl 25 as a bard. On Keenblade, bards are amazingly popular and it's completely possible to main heal Iron Tomb as a bard if you have a clue and are spec'd right. Could probably do that in DSM too, if you CC a couple mobs or have a strongly geared tank.

Personally, I'm finding that the rotations and game mechanics of Rift are at least as engaging as WoW if not more so. Certainly every time I go back to my Fury Warrior in WoW I'm reminded of how sucky and frustrating Rage generation can be.

Rift certainly isn't some quantum leap better than WoW, but IMHO it's a very solid competitor and just as good on many levels. Better on some, worse on others.

Sounds like he's just burned out on MMOs.

I'm still having fun at 50 and I'm not even doing any PvE really.

It may be a dumb question and if it's specifically been answered and I missed it, I apologize, but what do you do if you picked two trees that you like but don't really care for the third tree? Can you change one tree for another? And if so, how? (I am Ranger/Marksman/Bard, and thinking of dumping the Bard tree, if possible.)

At level 13, you can unlock additional souls for your calling via quests. For guardians, those quests start in Sanctum, unless you're a mage, in which case they start at Quicksilver College. Once you've done so, you can swap out souls you haven't spent any points in at any time by left-clicking on the soul in your soul tree window. If you HAVE spent points in a soul you'd like to get rid of, your class trainer can reset your soul tree to all zeroes for a modest price, and you can replace souls (provided you've unlocked the new one you want) and re-spend points at will.

Does anyone actually spread it out three? I pretty much just focus on two and maybe a point or so into the third one.

A useful thing about the three souls: if you have a soul with no points in it, you can switch to a different soul for free.

Wow, as simple as that, ehh? Wish I'd waited to buy the second Role. Just reset points and get the soul switch. Oh, well. Thanks for the help. :)

The most points I have in a 3rd tree on one of my rogue roles is 6 out of 44 points (level 33). And honestly, I'm considering respecing those out of the 3rd tree.

I haven't played with the builder enough to see if there is a strong 3-tree build that I would enjoy.

Has anyone been using the pvp souls? I think thats the next thing I want to explore. I have been doing a lot of Warfronts with my rogue, but have not picked up Infiltrator yet.

You probably won't be spending much if any points in the 3rd soul until you're in your high 30's or 40.

Playing around with the soul tree calc, I have several builds that all end up with around 10-14pts in the 3rd soul, but they will probably be the last points added.

Pretty much this. I've posited a few builds that end up with 6 in the third soul, some with 0, and others with 12-14. But, again, anything beyond 6 is usually low priority last touches.

Generally, I see 3 types of builds. Very heavy (not *always* 51 point, but usually) primary with the remainder used in a secondary soul and a 0 point tertiary; fairly evenly split deep (26-32) primary and secondary, with a zero to six point tertiary soul; and a deep (28-32) primary with an even split of secondary and tertiary that leaves them in the 14-18ish range.

Aizle,

My brother and I are on Keenblade as well. I'm level 38. I haven't seen nearly the number of players in Moonshade Highlands, Scarwood Reach, etc. and yet to have a zone-wide event since level 29 or so when I was in Scarlet Gorge. I'm thinking most players rushed to get to 50 on our shard and there are more Rift events in the higher level zones. What has been your experience with Rifts past level 30?
