Was watching Sister Wives last night (don't judge me, lol) and so far it seems like, aside from the religious and legal conflicts, polygamy seems pretty cool.
I wouldn't mind having my own house, a man that supported his kids and was gone long enough to miss him but not often enough to get on my nerves, and several other women to share the burden of raising kids with and ***** about the husband, hahaha!

Seriously, whats not to love about polygamy as it's portrayed in this TV show?

Playing devil's advocate here, but you would be okay with Nitefox getting some trim from several other women?

I don't think most people could handle that.

Yeah, there's the jealousy factor to consider. They touched on that briefly in last night's episode with the older women who have been sharing a husband for decades...said it was EXTREMELY difficult at first.
I wonder how the whole jealousy thing works out...that is a hindrance.

TMI warning.....
Spoiler:
That's actually a fantasy of mine...watching NF with another woman. But I'm not so sure how well a fantasy would play out in real life. And in the world of polygamy, I think each woman's relationship with the central husband character is private so it's not like I'd get to watch anyway. Poo. Guess I need to rethink this...

When I was younger I thought polygamy seemed really cool. I mean you got to bang lots of different chicks, and they were all cool with it.

But as I got older, I realized that they weren't chicks... they were wives. And wives ***** and nag. Additionally wives don't always put out, and they spend lots of your **** money.

And the more I thought about that I wondered to myself, "Why would anyone in their right mind want more than one of those."

That is where I remain on the issue today.

Yeah. Some of us actually put out. The ***** and nagging and the money spending are all true though.

Yeah I've got my hands full with just the one. I'm not throwing any other wives into the mix. Plus my mom would kill me.

That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Care to expound on that?

There's a lot of dick and trim going around in a polygamous setting that all parties need to be okay with all other parties getting.

For example, suppose you are okay with Nitefox shagging several other women, but he takes exception to you laying in bed with nine other women like a huge pimp. Or, what's good for the goose is good for the gander, right? Who's to say there aren't multiple husbands?

I've thought about that, actually. It's a lot more feasible for multiple wives than multiple husbands though.
If you have one husband and multiple women, there is the possibility for multiple children. Raising the children can be a full-time job and has the potential of providing the women with a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
In a multiple husband situation, there is not the potential for multiple children, obviously, and there would be the problem of who would get to plant their seed first and then next and so on....also, in the gestating scenario, the one wife being able to be constantly pregnant AND sexually satisfy her multiple husbands is just not feasible. *Most* women would not be capable of this. Furthermore, I fail to see what in the multiple husband situation would be there to provide the men with a sense of purpose and fulfillment.

Multiple wives and multiple husbands are not mutually exclusive. Read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert Heinlein sometime. Polygamy is a standard family unit due to the moon having originally began as a prison colony, and there being a major shortage of women. It's a rather interesting take on family structure.

I'll have to check that out; it sounds like a good read.

Invariably, strife would arise (sinful human nature) and you would not be able to love and care for them both as you ought. There's a lot of Polygamy in the old testament (though I think it's still short of God's perfect standard). Look at some of the trouble Jacob, Solomon, and David got into because they had multiple wives. You'll get an insight that the Hollywood version isn't giving you.

In modern cases I still say whatever people do that doesn't harm themselves is their business and their consequence.

Personally, I know I have a sin nature, and it'd be a chore to take care of one woman like I ought. Prolly why i'm still single ;)

I've had multiple wives, just not at the same time.

It's not all that, and if I had been married to them at the same time it would have sucked. I guess there are those who fantasize about the sex, but sex isn't a huge part of my life, percentage of time wise. The down side would totally overwhelm the up side.

In an ideal polyamorous situation with more than one woman in the family structure, the women would help keep each other happy, resulting in no net-increase in effort.

Of course, ideal situations don't exist, there's always a catch.

This would be an ideal topic for Shel or Taam to comment on. I haven't seen either in a while did they quit TRG?

It's generally regarded as his best work, after Stranger in a Strange Land.

No, they still post, infrequently.

However, to my knowledge, they just have a somewhat open relationship. A closed polyamorous relationship is a different sort of beast, and probably far more difficult to handle in several ways.

In the past they were in a closed poly relationship IIRC. I bet its referenced somewhere if you searched it.

I'm not positive, but you may be confusing them with another regular poster.

Perhaps I am at that.
