You don't get exp for killing things in Mass Effect 2. Also, incinerate works against shielded targets just fine.

ME1:

I now am in control of the Normandy. I travelled to a system and see several planets. Some of them had a "Press A to (Scan\survery)" I forget which. I did so and received credits. Is this the extent of the interaction?

I noticed some other planets offered no interaction other than an explanation of the geology and such. Are these planets possibly to visit later?
Also, when on an uncharted planet searching for a distress signal, I happened upon a Lithium deposit which I successfully scanned\surveyed. I received credits for this. Once again, is that the extent of the interaction? I am not sure if I am missing some subtlety regarding these scans as nothing really clearly explains this.

THanks again.

No, thats pretty much it.
In my experience there is usually 1 planet per system that is landable.
1-3 planets per system scannable/surveyable
Anything else is just flavor.

The scans/decryptions/etc of the various items (metal deposits, artifacts recovered etc) yield money/xp rewards that increase with level but not much else. (There are several quests tied to these but nothing beyond cash or the odd piece of equipment)

There are a few 'hidden' planets/asteroids/moons/space ships that show up as a sporatic blink of light in a few systems that also contain places to scan. There are maybe 10-20 of them in the whole game.

Unless you want the XP/money/achievements scanning minerals is probably the least useful part of the game. (though it can be lucrative at higher levels)

Anomalies, bases, points of interest could all be potential combat situations.

Honestly, the planet exploring was what I loved about the first one. Yeah, that craft sucked like nothing else in the game but some planets were really cool. It had a very pioneer feel to it. I wish they hadn't taken it out of the second. I'm hoping the third will have it back again.

I hated the Mako, to each his own. I thought the Hammerhead in part two was much more fun to use, the mission landscapes looked amazing, and I'm glad there weren't too many of them.

having replayed ME1 after ME2, most of the planets had me wishing i could get the Hammerhead instead of the Mako. That would have made everything alright.
