"One-to-many" polygamy reduces evolutionary pressure on one gender, while increasing it for the other. From a human perspective, one man to many women is far more practical than one woman to many men for obvious reproductive reasons. In that case, selective pressures are reduced for females and increased for males. On the balance, that might not matter were it not for two things:

1) The X chromosome is common to both genders, contains many important genes, and men don't have a spare.

2) Mitochondrial DNA (being separate from nuclear DNA) is inherited directly and entirely from the female side.

Because of this, decreasing evolutionary pressure on the female side is really a pretty bad idea for the human species. Worse, in any case, than the inverse.

One is rough enough, multiple is more than I can handle. I only have enough love for one woman. After that I'd have to start adding some filler to help spread it around.

Having met your mom, I doubt that. She's much too nice a person to kill her own son. She would just give you the glare of death and make you wish she would just shoot you and get it over with, then tell one of your male relatives to put you out of your misery. Which they would do because she told them to.

I'm not positive, but you may be confusing them with another regular poster.

I think Taly is the wise insight on this.

Seriously, didn't Shel and Taam have a live-in girlfriend for a long-time?

It's possible. That doesn't make it a "closed relationship," though.

If I recall correctly, that was before the Shel hit the scene.

Taamar lived with a boyfriend and girlfriend before we met, and we have had an open relationship since somewhere around our second or third year together. While we're open to the idea of adding a live-in girlfriend to our relationship, we're not actively pursuing this as a goal and haven't stumbled across the "right girl" yet.

If you don't mind me asking, (and if you do, thats ok), but what is that like? If there is sexual activity, must all parties be involved? If two of you want to have sex without the third, can you go into a bedroom and close the door and the third has to respect your privacy? Does jealousy come into play?
I'm totally open-minded here in asking; I'm genuinely curious.

I could have sworn from threads in one of the several previous incarnations of the glade that Taly and husband had a live in as well.

Someone pays attention. Close enough, anyway. She doesn't exactly live with us, she has her own apartment.

While this question was for Shelgeyr, I will say the more answers you get, the clearer picture it will be, since I imagine the answer will vary depending on which couple/trio you ask.

Quote:

Not in our case. Although this is probably because the girlfriend is mine, not my husband's. He's invited to join sometimes.

Quote:

Yes.

Quote:
Does jealousy come into play?

We work hard to ensure it doesn't. I don't imagine it's possible for everyone, but this is something of a unusual situation. The dynamic is definitely trickier.

That's how it starts. ;)

Quick run LK! Talya will lead you to the dark side!
Not saying you may not enjoy it or it's a bad thing.. but ya know.. it's the dark side and all hehe :P
Totally un-related (possibly) topic. Why are the things are the dark side so fun/yummy/enjoyable? :neko:

Lyddia:

That's because many religious folk try to follow "ascetism" to different extents. They relate goodness to refraining from fun and enjoyable things. For example the holiday Lent. It's all very backwards and they are afflictled with cultural illness in my opinion.

Quote:
Asceticism (from the Greek: ἄσκησις, áskēsis, "exercise" or "training") describes a lifestyle characterized by abstinence from various sorts of worldly pleasures often with the aim of pursuing religious and spiritual goals. Some forms of Christianity (see especially: Monastic life) and the Indian religions (including yoga) teach salvation and liberation involve a process of mind-body transformation effected by exercising restraint with respect to actions of body, speech, and mind. The founders and earliest practitioners of these religions (e.g. Buddhism, Jainism, the Christian desert fathers) lived extremely austere lifestyles, refraining from sensual pleasures and the accumulation of material wealth. This is to be understood not as an eschewal of the enjoyment of life, but a recognition that spiritual and religious goals are impeded by such indulgence.

For the most part, it's kinda nice. We tend to select alternate partners with whom we share interests that aren't common to us. For example, I tend to date girls who like to watch movies, as Taamar doesn't. This arrangement means I get to watch movies with someone I'm close to, and Taamar doesn't have to suffer the experience.

LadyKate wrote:

Not at all.

LadyKate wrote:

Yes, however, we tend to either have sex outside our own home or when the other partner is elsewhere. I think you may be confusing me with someone who has a multiple-partner living arrangement.

LadyKate wrote:

Sometimes. When it does, we do our best to figure out whatever is causing us trouble and find a way to resolve the issue.

Yeah but he won't let me do his hair and make-up and talk about boys and the Kardashians and stuff. He also doesn't like it when I ***** about him, to him. Kinda need another girl around for all that.

Or... and this is crazy I know... you could make a friend that is a girl rather than get a girlfriend? ;)
