I have no idea why they named it "diaspora", but a snarky response is that you'd be running from Facebook.

Apparently I'm the only person on the whole site who got 9001 invites. It's like some sort of lottery. I'm not making this up. This is really bizarre.

I'm not dissatisfied, but I'm surprised it took them so long to get it to this point.

The privacy of Diaspora is pretty cool. Once it goes live and actually has a large userbase, I'll delete my Facebook account. There is no reason to have one anymore if this catches on.

I'm still trying to recover from the fact that I don't even know (or care) what "diaspora" is, and Micheal is asking me to send him invites :p~~

Diaspora is basically Facebook but you can have contact groups (called Aspects) and you can filter messages/updates/pictures to people based on their groups. I currently have Work, Family, Friends and Glade aspects. Everything is private by default and all communication is encrypted.

Also, it has the added benefit of being open source and installable on your own servers. I plan on doing this once it officially launches.

Would there be any benefit to setting something up on the Glade's server? I don't know anything about it and don't feel like looking into it myself.

Honestly since we all commune on a message board I don't know that adding a facebook-like system would be very beneficial.

Lenas, if it was something that we could incorporate into the Glade that might be worth looking into. I was a member of a message board a few years back that had something like that...you had your own journal and photo album under your profile and you could choose who was allowed to see what. It was pretty cool.
