She had heartworms and it was at a treatable phase but ten minutes after the injections that the vet gave her she was dead...we tried CPR and adrenaline injections but it was too late. Even though she was on baby aspirin, per his orders, he says she suffered a sudden heart attack or stroke and he was dumbfounded...said that's never ever happened before. (She was only 5 years old!)
My son cried and kissed her forehead but then he wanted to be done grieving and went to his dad's for a couple of days to get away from it all. I think he'll be ok.
We had Ash cremated and I found a nice galvanized bucket with a fitted lid at an antique store and put her ashes in it.
I'm still kind of shocked. I wasn't expecting her to die so suddenly...even without treatment she was *supposed* to have at least a few months to a couple of years left...I thought for sure treatment was the way to go since the vet gave her such a good prognosis and said "if it was my dog, I'd go ahead and treat her."
I hate this. We just lost a dog we loved in December and that was tough, nevermind all the human losses in the past two years.
Ash was such a sweet, sweet, and intelligent dog....the weird thing was that yesterday, before I went into work and took all the dogs with me, I cuddled Ash and cried and told her I was sorry for every time I'd every yelled at her or hurt her when she pooped on the floor or ate something she wasn't supposed to or got in my way...I told her I was sorry for all those times and that she was a really good doggie and I loved her. I couldn't tell you why I felt compelled to do that. Just one of those things that struck me. Later that afternoon, when she had to be sedated for the x-ray, the vet told me to talk to her as she went to sleep and I felt compelled to tell her her whole life story starting from when we found her by a dumpster all skin and bones and mangey to when she used to run beside me on my 4 wheeler on the cow farm scouting fencelines.....told her she was a good, good, good doggie and I loved her so much.
Other than a brief "good girl, it's ok, good girl" when she tried to stand up after the anesthesia wore off and we had to get her to lay down to give her the heartworm treatment shots...that's the last time I spoke to her alive.\
I was awake at 3am and couldn't go back to sleep...wish I could get the image of her laying on the concrete and me doing chest compressions and crying "come on, Ash, come on!!" with all my stupid tears running into her fur out of my head. I wish I could erase that memory because it hurts.
Coming home from choir practice last night and her not being there to greet me was like a punch in the stomach. Ash has been a great comfort through my years as a single mom in college, through the loss of my mom and grandma and two babies, and such a wonderful and well-behaved and obedient and loving companion to my son...his best friend.
I wish I hadn't taken her for granted so many, many, many times. I miss her so much.

Wow, that is heart wrenching Katie.. You and your family have my sympathy...

I didn't have the emotional attachment that LK and her son had, shoot they knew Ash longer than they've known me. But I'll stress what a smart, well behaved dog she was. In the almost three years I've known LK, that dog barked maybe 20 times to my knowledge? She loved to nuzzle and would offer up her paw to let you know she wanted to be petted. She minded when you told her to go lay down or would go to her spot if you told her to stop doing something. She loved getting in my truck. Whenver we would go over to my parents house, we usually brought her so she could run around. She jumped and clawed at the tailgate until I let it down, then would jump up in the bed of the truck. She knew when we got there because when we turned into their long driveway, she was halfway out of the truck before I came to a stop.

She was sneaky though. When we used to have the catfood back in one of the rooms, she would sneak back there and eat it. It took us a while to figure it out because she never did it when were around or waited till we were asleep. If we were in the house, she never ventured past the living room unless we let her(minus the sneaking back to eat the cats food).

She was a good dog.

As for what your vet told you.......

Heart worm treatment (to kill the heart worms, once infested) is ALWAYS a risk. Anytime you are giving what amounts to poison to kill a parasite inside the pet's heart, there is a risk of death. Usually it doesn't happen as you describe, but once the worms die and the body has to get rid of them. The younger and less infested/developed the worms are, the safer. But there is always risk.

If you have other pets you value, or get another, have them tested and treat them via pill or shot form if you can afford so. I think the shot is cheaper of the two, and less hassle, if you take your pet in for yearly check-ups. IIRC the shot version here is around $65/yearly shot.

The one time I met Ash I thought she was a pretty good dog, well behaved, a little curious, quiet. It was the little dog Chewie that tried to hump my head from behind, causing LK to become embarrassed and Nitefox to smirk a little trying to keep from laughing.

Anyway Katie, condolences to you and your family, I hope the puppies work out for you.

Sam, my vet discussed all of that with me but instantaneous death was never a consideration...he said we had to do the treatments over 3 months to make sure that the worms died slowly enough for the body to break them down internally so they wouldn't cause any blockage. The aspirin she was on was supposed to help with blood flow. Just one of those freak things I suppose.....those things seem to happen to me a lot.
As far as heartworm prevention goes, we don't have the shot around here but we do have the oral stuff. Whenever I thought about it I didn't have the money for it and when I had the money for it I never thought about it...completely and totally my fault.
The two puppies we rescued from the animal shelter a week ago are on heartworm prevention and will continue to be for the rest of their lives. I have learned my lesson the hard way.

It's weird without Ash here. My son cried again before he went to bed last night and we included Ash in our bedtime prayer greetings and wondered which of his siblings in heaven got to claim Ash. It was very sweet...we are going to be grieving for this dog for some time.

I'm very sorry to hear this, LK - must have been hard, but thanks for sharing the full story.

Our cat died last year (after 15 years or so), and our six-year old son every once in a while will start crying and say that he misses him, even now. So, yeah, grieving will take a while, but I think you're on the right track. Best wishes.
