That big ball o' TNT leaves pretty epic results. :p

I had a plan once to secretly impregnate the ground with a path of hidden TNT. It would connect to someone's building in a minecraft server and... do something. Perhaps spell out my name! Maybe link to some other structure and blow that up too. But the main idea is that it would simply lay in wait in the ground, always vulnerable, unknown to all others. If they decide to blow up their building, or even are digging around near it and decide to whack the seemingly innocent TNT block they encounter, they will be in for quite a surprise!

I never figured out the math involved on just what sort of spacing would be ideal between TNT blocks, or how deep to put them, etc, but it probably wouldn't be too bad. Fun experimenting to find out, at least! Any experiments are good if they include explosions. The Mythbusters have confirmed that time after time.

Is it bad of me that I get the most enjoyment out of Minecraft by watching people grief Minecraft servers on youtube?

Yes. At least you aren't the grieferer.

Update!

See the top post. The server has been migrated over to Mookhow's home computer (at least for the moment). This doesn't really affect anyone else -- just sayin'.

And we have Nether now! Just...kind of lame nether without ghasts.

Also, no slimes. They're invincible in SMP. Thanks, Notch.

Here's a map of the Gladecraft world so far: http://meriwoker.dyndns.org/~eobert/min ... _world.png

edit: flipped the map so NW is up: http://meriwoker.dyndns.org/~eobert/min ... world2.png

I have a question. Can you make lakes and dams, and then break the dams and have the lakes pour into a gorge or into plains and have it flood everything?

Water flows 8 squares horizontally without any sort of elevation drop. So if you have a dam and break it, the water will spill out but it won't flood the entire area.

Water in minecraft is basically cellular automata. The rules are:

  1. Water source blocks (a.k.a. water springs) always have a depth of 8.
  2. If there is an empty space below a water block of any type or depth, a water flow block of depth 8 will be created below it. No water flow blocks will be created laterally. I.e., if water can flow down, it won't flow sideways.
  3. If a water block of any type with a depth of at least 2 cannot flow down, but it can flow sideways, a water flow block will be "born" in the adjacent space(s). The depth of the child flow block will be [parent depth - 1].

So you can make water spread out indefinitely by putting a drop in elevation every 8 blocks. It's not truly indefinite, though, since eventually you'll reach bedrock. But it is mostly possible to flood a valley below a damn if you do it right.

That's kind of lame. This game needs to be open source so someone can make proper flooding. Water should also have velocity and force so it can push other things around or carve holes and cause collapses. Basically this game needs a better physics engine and then I'd play it.

Water used to be volumetric in the earlier versions, but it was changed for some reason. Probably partly due to performance contrains; I don't know. Notch does strange things.

As to open-source minecraft:

Stathol - thanks for mentioning (and diagramming) the chicken farm; and thanks for building that water brake on the Gladecraft server. I hadn't thought of or discovered either of these things and now am using both designs in my own local server. I especially like the water brake. Makes rapid descents ever so much more fun :)

I've built all sorts of things on the Gladecraft server. Whenever I see an interesting design someone did, I try to reproduce it on Gladecraft. That's why there are random constructions littering the landscape.

Maybe you can tell me what the heck to make of that series of ladder blocks and half-submerged doors? There are signs down below, labeling things like the equalizer pressure plate and such, but it makes no sense to me at all.

That is the endpoint of a water highway. Normally, boats would be loaded there waiting on the side with one door. When you get in the boat, the door opens, and you're launched at full speed down the highway.

It works fine in single player, but the boats keep ghosting on the server. Seems to be a bukkit issue.

edit: Here's the tutorial I followed when making it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiLqKn6TS9s

Ok, I can see how that would be pretty handy. Shame it's acting wiggy.

Ok the picture of the world is awesome. Any chance you might share how one could go about creating a picture like that of a Minecraft world?

I believe the program I used was Minemapper. You need the world file, of course. I had Stathol give me a copy of the Gladecraft world.

The program has different options. You can render the map in daytime, or nighttime, or only show caves, etc.

FYI, I upgraded the server today.

Craftbukkit: #556 (latest recommended)
Essentials: 2.0.300
CraftIRC: 2.0 10b

I haven't tested any of this beyond making sure the server started without errors, so let me know if anything (new) is spazzing out.

The only thing I've seen that's different so far is that the nether portals are working properly. No more sending you to 0,0.

I've used Cartograph to map my own SMP, but we explored a bit too far and now I can't render an isometric map of our world. Program created a 40MB .png file last time it ran successfully, but now it just chokes and dies.

This is the deal with Minecraft: When it gets anti-aliasing support, I will buy it.
