So I got a bread machine from my mother slightly used, and she said it works just fine.

I tried it tonight, and I got this....

Anyone have any idea what happened? It was all dry and crumbly as hell. I followed the recipe exactly that was in the manual...

Can't see the pic...I'm a Facebook Luddite :p

But for some reason, a lot of people's first try with a breadmaker results in fail...I know I did with my first try. But the tries after that worked fine. Make sure the agitator blade is seated properly and try again, following the breadmaker's instructions and not necessarily the bread mix package instructions.

I will clean it once it cools.

Read the instructions thoroughly before I tried that loaf, but still got that...

And I can't get her to show me how to use it. She lives a state away, and because of her aneurysm she can't remember much about cooking (in addition to other stuff) >_>

Sorry...my "bread machine" is a large bucket with a hand crank hook I inherited from my mother...never had a bad loaf of bread out of it. I'm going to agree with Colphax regarding bread maker instructions, though.

Not sure where you live but altitude/humidity adjustments to recipes might have to be made.

It's your dough-kneading I think, hard to tell from the picture but it looks like instead of a bunch of mini-air pockets (bubbles) throughout the bread you ended up with one giant one in the middle that caved in on itself? When that happens the rest of the bread dries out because the steam that would normally be in the little bubbles ends up trapped in the giant bubble that busts. That's usually caused by over-kneading. There's a technique you have to follow when using a bread-maker especially that honestly just made me decide my life is better with store-bought bread ;)

Frankly, I'm always astounded when a bread machine works. Just doesn't seem like it should.

I've never had trouble.....

I buy a box labled for bread machines. It has everything in it you need. I pour the contents in the bucket thingy and make like an indentation in the center of the flour...then add the water in the indentation and the fast rise yeast to the water.

Then after the first knead I add raisins...I love hot, fresh raisin bread with butter.


Look for the box stuff, Crim, I've never had a loaf that was crumbly.

This. Except the raisin part. Never tried that.

this is what I used before, Vindi, and then after the first knead, I put a bunch of raisins in. If u put the raisins in at the begining, it pulverizes them, so wait till after the first knead. One box makes one loaf of bread. It is so good when it is fresh out of the machine!

How old is your yeast? I got a couple loaves like that, and replaced the yeast with new 'bread machine' yeast it it worked beautifully.

Also use recipes specific for bread machines.

We use a bread machine pretty frequently - put it on before bed on a timer, fresh bread in the AM. I have also made bread from scratch.

Check your flour - heavier flours do change the water / yeast ratios needed. Use the breadmaker instructions. I use plain strong flour and dried yeast - not mixes or 'for breadmaker' marked up stuff.

Have you googled the machine to see what's out there?
