I get that you believe as much, but when the "expert" advice on policy continues to result in disastrous outcomes, require endless retroactive revision, and post-hoc alterations to its theory, mathematics, and models; perhaps the "expert" conclusions are simply flawed; that is to say, the empirical evidence does not support the position you call "expert".

A friend of mine who worked in a used book store said she loved the customers who had just bought homes with lots of built in bookshelves. They would come in with a shopping cart and empty the shelves of all the cheap hard covers that had been sitting around unsold for a long time, not even looking at the titles, authors or subject matter. One bought seven copies of the same Bulwer-Lytton novel, just because they were hardbound and "looked good" on the shelf.

ugh, that's awful.

My library is organized by books I've read, and those I haven't read yet. Admittedly, there are inherited books that are antiques that I might never get around to reading, but I can't imagine paying for a book I'm never going to read. That's just... wrong.

Wasn't there something in "The Great Gatsby" about that?

I'm in the same boat for the most part, and entirely agree with you in principal. With the exception of my antiques, I've read every book in my library. And the library only contains those which have made the cut, and I would read or have read again. I don't feel like I've earned the right to display it unless I know the contents. (Not that what others do is wrong, it's just a quirk I have.) Additionally, I HAVE read most of the antiques, and those I haven't read are generally because the books themselves are in too good a condition to break the binding, or are aged to the point of being delicate, and I haven't gotten around to finding a readable copy.

Same, except I don't box books I'm going to read. I just put them on the shelf. So there are some I haven't gotten to yet.



My aunt collected first edition Sci Fi books, and I have to be honest, I'm not all that interested in the vast majority of these. To be fair, they are in storage and not displayed.

I have hundreds of expensive, antique books, however, and many of them are absolutely beautiful. I have many of these out, but there's no way I'll be able to get to all of these. Some, like you said, should not be handled except very rarely.

On a side note, there is one book I have never read and refuse to until I get an original edition. I'm dying to read an original Uncle Tom's Cabin.

You'll be hard pressed to come across one; that said, I can probably arrange a photo PDF of one.

I've read most of mine. Those I haven't are things I still plan to read someday. I don't collect them ONLY because they look good on bookshelves. I buy them because I think it's a book I should read and it will look good on my bookshelft. It might even be the type I'll re-read. (Most of my Shakespeare, Tolkien, A.C. Doyle and a few other hardcovers have been read multiple times.)

It occurs to me I have no Jules Verne. This upsets me.
