I Have one question?

Was it legal under local law for him to shoot the elephant?

No: He should be punished appropriately.

Yes: Tough stuff, get over it. There is nothing wrong with legal game hunting be it sport, defense, or subsistence (or apparently all of the above)

I am however fine with free association and if the Humane society wishes to take their business elsewhere for any reason, that's their right.

Makes more sense to me that way (I think that's what you meant); I agree.

I thought about that argument too...I guess it would depend on whether the part that mattered was the end result or the motivation to carry it out.

I think they both matter, but in different ways. I judge acts and actors separately, with end results being more relevant to my opinion of the acts and motivation being more relevant to my opinion of the actor. For instance, imagine Bob and Greg each give $1000 to charity, but Bob is motivated purely by compassion while Greg just wants a tax deduction. In judging the acts, I would say that both donations are "good things" that make the world a better place, but in judging the actors, I would say that Bob is being generous while Greg is being self-serving.

Incorrect. Both are motivated by self-serving interests. They are both donating because of the feelings donating gives them. Greg feels good about his tax deduction, and Bob feels good about helping people. The motivation is the good feeling they get from the act, and the truth is, that both acts are entirely for the satisfaction of the one performing them. If donating made them feel bad, neither would do it.

It seems that the idea simply fills you with fear and revulsion, because you are so often told that we should not feel pleasure at the death of another. I would agree that we shouldn't, but some people simply do. If, however, they engage in self-control and turn that energy to positive ends, what is immoral about that?

I don't know about immoral, but it's definitely creepy. (See Dexter.)

It occurs to me after seeing this that I may not be entirely clear. The sort of people I'm talking about do not "enjoy killing" in the sense of enjoying the actual death of another person in and of itself, like a psychopath might. They would not, for example, want to strangle a child any more than anyone else.

The killing they enjoy is in confronting and defeating a dangerous enemy, one tht is intelligent and has the potential to kill them. The best way to put it is that they enjoy the defeat of an enemy in circumstances where that defeat is highly likely to end in death for the defeated party. When such people don't find healthy outlets for this, they become things like gang members or other forms of organized criminal, not psychopaths. When they do find a healthy outlet they generally go into the military, in the most combat-oriented tasks they can find.

People like this are also quite rare; the vast majority of soldiers or gang members wouldn't fit into this category.

People like this to a less extreme degree are more common, however, and we call them "adrenaline junkies". One way to satisfy that desire is hunting big game. Big game is dangerous to hunt, just not as dangerous as an armed human.

Both of these. I think this is perfectly normal and acceptable human behavior as long as the outlets are legal. In this guy's case, big game hunting was his choice and I don't see a problem with it, *especially* since he was doing some good as well.

I don't think it's creepy or immoral for people to enjoy killing. Do you think every state executioner should be required to hate their job to be considered "normal?"

I use to enjoy magnifying glassing ants and tormenting other small insects. putting a string around christmas beetles and having them fly around as a pet does come to mind.

Wouldn't say it's abnormal, just different ideas of fun

I did this when I was younger too. I'd also put different critters into a jar, such as ants, wasps, caterpillers, and spiders, and would make them fight.

One time I took a log filled with red carpenter ants and left it on my driveway where there were black ants. They had a big war. It was awesome.

It appears as if you have all missed the point here.

An elephant never forgets.

A bull elephant was targeted and killed.

A message was sent.

Yeah that's usually the way it works. You kill one so the herd will move on.
