When I was researching a cars late last year, I was wide open to anything (other than an SUV perhaps). I looked at this class of car and whittled it down to the GTI and the MAZDA3. While, Ultimately I ended up buying something else, you may want to check out the Mazda before you decide. Just throwing that out there.

Would be fun to drive, I'd personally try the Mazda 3 or a Mini Cooper though before deciding. Maybe even wait on the whatever Kia is coming up with to compete with the GTI or their coupe ala Hyundai Genesis (I am biased as I just bought a Kia with the turbo engine and it's a lot of fun)
