Ridiculous.

Versus the completely reasonable $15/month for a MMORPG? ;)

I can play more than 4 hours in one sitting in an MMO ;) The cost per unit hour is FAR less.

HBO's only asking me for 15.99.

IPT demands I maintain a ratio of 1:1 or better.

I ended up ordering HBO, and they said if I got phone service with them that it would be $.14 cheaper than what I'm paying now. So their going to hook up a phone line, though I don't even have a regular phone anymore, and I'm not planning on getting one. But hey...if they want to hook up a phone line, they can go for it.

So? First episode. Thoughts?

Viserys is not exactly how I imagined him. I'm not getting the level of angst and casual disregard for Daenarys' feelings that I expected.

I was a bit disappointed in the Hound's helm; it looks good, but it's way less practical than modelling it after a breed with a shorter snout. That thing is one huge blade trap as depicted.

Sansa came off, in this episode, at least, as a little power-blinded, rather than just stupidly besotted with Joff himself. The line where she declares that being queen is all she's ever wanted just didn't feel right.

Loved Tyrion. Jaime looks good from here, too. Liked Bran. I'm not sure how thrilled I am with the casting/makeup on Robb and Jon with respect to Catelyn and Ned. There's a strong emphasis in the books that Arya and Jon's coloration is pretty distinct, and favors Ned, while the rest of the Stark kids favor Cat. I get that well with Sansa and Arya (did we even see Rickon? I don't blame 'em if we don't, as he's got no real role yet and would have to age dramatically between now and when he shows up, being so young), but Jon and Robb look *very* similar, and neither seems to reflect either parent well. I think toning down Jon's curly hair might have been enough to set them apart more. Because as it is, their coloration is pretty much the same, and they both have kind of curly hair, and if you look at facial structure, I'd actually get it wrong as to who was Cat's child, because Jon's got the softer, rounder face like Cat.

Finally, I wasn't quite thrilled with the somewhat adversarial exchange between Theon and Robb; while it's not necessarily out of place for that scene, it was the only one depicted, and doesn't bring across that they're closer than that. So it's not setting up future Theon stuff to really make sense.

All in all, though, it's a positive showing.

Rickon was sitting on the saddle that was on the fence when the boys were doing the archery. At least I assumed that was him, made sense.

Oh wow, this show is rather NSFW.

This is going to sound odd, coming from me, but the first episode doesn't fill me with a lot of interest. I could do without the gore, language, and nudity in my television programming. Television for me is a social thing...

Well for what it's worth, not every episode should be like that I think. I mean, the novels got pretty graphic on some details, but it was kind of in a "not pulling any punches" kinda way, rather than trying to be "omg shocking!"

And the fact that the first episode happen to include Drogo's wedding, Bran catching the twins going at it, and introducing Tyrion, etc...

(Though I could be wrong too, and the episodes end up paced where each one comes includes scenes that gets pretty graphic hehe.)

I get the opposite feeling. I'm pretty sure that if they are willing to film a brother and sister going at, doggy style no less; portray (an admittedly aged) Daenarys, a minor in terms of the book, sexually and naked; and shoot a fairly graphic four girl reverse gang-bang with a **** midget, that the directors have no issues with going for shock viewership in any subsequent episode...

Well when I mentioned the "shock" thing, I was referring to the books hehe. I just meant that I don't think there was that much in the books to keep every episode near as constantly graphic as the first one.

Spoilered for those who haven't read the books:
Spoiler:
I'm betting the second episode will have the incident that led to Sansa's dire wolf being killed along with Arya's friend, but that's all I can think of.

Color me skeptical when the first episode amounted to nothing more than exceptionally violent soft-core porn with production values.

With each moment being far more true to the books than most adaptions, so eh.

I'd like to point out I didn't finish the first episode. I was watching it on my lunch break at work, and turned it off at the midget+4 whores scene. I still got the impression it was.. well... "exceptionally violent soft-core porn with production values."

Impressions after 1st episode...

I think I saw too many previews, read too many reviews, and expected too much. I did enjoy it but I think I set myself up for slight disappointment. Having said that, it has made me want to start reading the book again which I did do late last night. I'll read as much as I can in between each episode and whatever will be will be. What do I expect to happen now? I will have an experience that will be better than any single two hour movie could have provided as well as have an enhanced reading experience. It will be like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup, where the coming together of two delicious parts make the whole better.

I expect to be thoroughly entertained for the next 9 to 10 weeks. :D

What, did the pirates cut off the part where they put up the ratings for Adult Content, Adult Language, Violence, and Nudity? I've got a pretty permissive workplace computer use policy, and I wouldn't be watching stuff flagged for Nudity on my lunch break here...

Yes, they did cut any preamble the network may have posted first.

However, I don't use my workplace computer, or even my own desk...that's what my little netbook is for.

Well you made it halfway through the first episode at least hehe (which is when the Tyrion whorehouse scene is.) There is about 2-2.5 minutes of scenes that has nudity off and on in those scenes, each also tied to important stuff unrelated to the nudity, so I dunno, calling it "soft-core porn" seems a little much.

This. Sure, there were boobies, but nothing overly excessive, nor really any more than was in the books IIRC.

First ep was a little slow, but since there are Loads and Loads of Characters to introduce, each with their own motivations and shockingly tragic backstories I kinda figured it would be.

I quite liked it, and I can see that winter is definitely coming.

This! I was sitting here last night thinking how I can't believe I have to wait a whole week. I haven't been this into a TV show since LOST.
