Hahahaha! That was actually pretty good. The first minute and a half was ho-hum but after that I really started laughing.
Too bad Lady Gaga doesn't have a sense of humor....or does she? I wonder how many times stuff like this happens and it was someone who works for the start who made the decision and not the star themselves?

Very cute. I guess lady GaGa couldn't tell it was a parody.

TL;DR - BURNED!

http://alyankovic.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/gaga-update/

Quote:
Well, this was a strange day.

After putting my Lady Gaga parody on YouTube this morning – and announcing that it wouldn’t be on my next album because Gaga didn’t approve it – there was a huge outpouring of disappointment from the Internet.

Apparently the fact that she didn’t approve it was news to Lady Gaga herself!

Gaga’s manager has now admitted that he never forwarded my parody to Gaga – she had no idea at all. Even though we assumed that Gaga herself was the one making the decision (because, well, that’s what we were TOLD), he apparently made the decision completely on his own.

He’s sorry.

And Gaga loves the song.

I’m thrilled on many levels to hear this, because 1) I truly respect and admire Gaga as an artist and it pained me to think of her as having less than a great sense of humor, and 2) it means I GET TO PUT OUT MY ALBUM!

As promised, all my proceeds from the song (and the MUSIC VIDEO… I can’t wait…) will go to the Human Rights Campaign.

Thank you, Gaga. And thanks to everybody who had my back.

Whew!

Your pal,
Al

How is somebody a performing artist's manager in the music business and doesn't know enough to forward along requests from Weird Al? What did he think was going to happen?

Lady G is so absurd that there is no way to really parody her. She is already a parody of the the industry, imo.

My spider senses are tingling. I'd guess the manager is falling on the sword for her. I'm making a guess she didn't approve of the song and screwed with Weird Al and then changed her mind when people saw how unpopular she would be. Then she needed a way to save face so the manager takes the blame. Want to bet the manager doesn't get fired? But then again I could be wrong. But it's funny how this all comes out a day or two later, after popular opinion went against her. And I'm a Lady Gaga fan, but I'm still suspicious.

I'm sure others have said the same thing about Michael Jackson, M.C. Hammer and countless other artists.

Awesome. Glad it worked out.

Weird Al doesn't actually need an artist's permission to do parodies, by law he can do them with no repercussions. He just stated many times over the past 30 years that he gets their permission as a professional courtesy and that if they say no, he will abide by it.

This is why he never released a video for the Eminem 8 Mile parody, because Eminem "OK'ed" the song, but said "no" on the video. But that's ok, Weird Al got his jabs in with his "interview" of him Here.

I still think it was impressive that Weird Al was able to get permission from Michael Jackson to do a parody of "Beat It." At the time, Weird Al was a nobody and extremely few (other than hardcore Dr. Demento fans) knew who he was. And conversely, Thriller was superhot and Jackson was the biggest star around. But, Michael gave him the thumbs up and helped launch the career of Al. Michael would do the same again a few years later for "Fat."

Heh, when I was a kid we got my dad to start listening to Weird Al. My father was a surgeon and he liked listening to music in the operating room. We convinced him to get a Weird Al cassette because of the 'Like a Surgeon' song...we thought that was pretty funny.

Is it wrong that I want the album art to be Weird Al wearing raw meat?

I'm sorry, have you seen Lady Gaga or the things she does? That's not even a remotely close to MJ or... MC Hammer... :psyduck:

Only vaguely. Not my thing. I wasn't trying to compare his/her style to anyone else's. Just trying to point out that Al has been able to parody the most edgy performers of past eras.

Weird Al has an incredible amount of respect in the music industry. (Did you know he has three Grammy awards?) My favorite story is when he asked Mark Knopfler's permission to parody "Money for Nothing," Knopfler agreed, with one provision. He could only parody it if Knopfler himself were allowed to play guitar for the parody.

Knopfler is, in my opinion, the greatest guitarist in history, and he wanted to play guitar in a Weird Al song. I doubt his qualification was in any way a hardship for Al.

I'm pretty sure Weird Al's response to this was...'HELL YEAH !!'

Heh heh. Yeah, the story continues to go that Jim West (Al's guitarist) worked really hard to replicate Money's studio riff exactly as it sounds but Knopfler had been playing that song on tour hundreds of times. So when Knopfler played it, it had a "looser" feel to it. Jim's version actually sounded more accurate to the original than Knopfler's! But everyone still agreed Knopfler's was awesome.

The other awesome thing about Al, is he one hell of a showman. He does in no way disappoint in concert. He will dress up in all the different costumes that he used for his videos. Amish Paradise, Like a Surgeon, even the fat suit from "Fat." It's amazing to see live.

On top of that, the poor guy makes sacrifices to his craft. He refuses to have any air conditioning on when travelling (and even tapes up the ducts) as it affects his vocal chords.

Sorry, I am a recovering Al-Aholic from my early days.

I am also curious. I finally got to go see Al the very first time last year. It was amazing.
