So is there a way for me to pay once for this game and be able to run it on my laptop and desktop? I'd like very much to not have to pay twice. But I get the feeling Steam would figure it out.

Steam is account-based. You can set up your account on as many computers as you like, and download the program to ALL of them. You can only be logged into Steam (and thus running the game) on one at a time, though.

Ultimately, the most elegant, unintrusive, and secure copy protection scheme to date. It lets you do what you want to do, while enforcing the license (one simultaneous use) that most EULAs strive for.

/sigh

Well that makes 3 crashes in less than 24 hours.

I hope they have a patch coming soon.

Patch and the Toolkit are rumored to be dropping on Monday. Think they've been working on it all weekend.

Okay, so this raises the question then: What happens if my wife is playing on the laptop and I try to play on my desktop? Will I just get a "sorry, not right now" message or is Steam going to invalidate my key for play and not let me play at all?

Haven't tried that yet, myself. But I'm assuming you could turn on "Offline Mode" and both be able to play. It's worth a shot anyway. Next time I pull the laptop out, I'll have to install Steam and try it out.

Just goto File > Go Offline, to enter Offline mode. Here's the official documentation for Offline mode. So like I said, not sure if it will work, or not. But it's definitely something worth trying out.

Offline mode not-withstanding, Whoever's Steam is already on when the second one starts will drop them from the game, log them out, and give a "Your account has been logged in on another computer" message. Happens to me occasionally when I bring my laptop out of hibernation without thinking.

I put 4 green quality items in the transmuter, got back a green gem. I imagine it gives a random gem? No idea. But that's another thing it will do. :p

Generally approving of this game, though it definitely takes "diablo clone" to the max. Isn't much they improve on the game, judging by my hour or two of playing it. Kinda hoped they'd get rid of Diablo's saving up points on level up to spend all at once down the road, though. I never thought that was a fun design. I always thought the idea of incremental, minor upgrades on level up was to always have something neat to look forward to when you level. As it is now I'm stuck waiting for a bunch more levels before I want to spend them at all. Ah well, still overall a fun game. :p

edit: bah, and now I notice the Shared Stash! That was a perfectly wonderful sabre I ended up transmuting!

edit 2: whoops! Misunderstood the saving points thing. Each rank of a Skill raises its level cap by 1, so you can't just save up 10 points and dump all 10 when you get to the proper level. This means you only have to hoard points if you will soon be working up 2 Skills simultaneously. When you add in the bonus skill points you get for Fame levelups this is probably pretty reasonable. Definitely makes me more flexible on my Alchemist, as I don't have all that many skills I feel like I need to max out in a hurry.

edit 3: sometimes the next rank of a skill takes even more than 1 level. I should clearly lern2play before I say how things work. :p

What I wish they would add is time based incremental character saves, not just when you exit/load.

I keep getting crashes deep in dungeons, and losing all my progress/cash gained/drops.

Now I have to exit to title every 5 minutes or so to ensure my data is saved- seems like an autosave option would save a lot of pain.

And the transmuting of items to gems is pretty cool- I think I'll give that a shot with all the excess I've been getting.

I do like that you can pay to recover gems in this game- makes it much more worth it to use them as you level, instead of just transmuting and only using them at the highest level in your best gear.

Found this on the official forums. Transmuting Recipies. Some of them are confirmed, others were found through data mining and may/may not work.

Doesn't it save when you leave/enter town, as well?

EDIT: Ahh, according to the FAQ, the game saves when you exit or enter a level.

FAQ wrote:
Q) How do I save the game

A) The game saves whenever you exit or enter a level, and when exiting to menu or closing the application, automatically

So, it seems like you could just port back to town every once in a while to save your game. And there's definitely no shortage of Town Portal scrolls.

This does not, however, work on the randomly generated levels you get from summoning scrolls. You cannot use a town portal in the level, but must play it all the way through in one go.

Otherwise, yes- it would work fine.

Also, the loading time tends to be pretty long, so having to load in and out every 5 minutes gets a bit tedious, as opposed to just hitting a 'save progress' button.

Yea, they are a bit slow. However, there's a possible fix to that. I'll have to see if I can find the post I read about how someone fixed that.

Basically, all the game files are in one big zip file. Pak1.zip, or something. Well, I believe he unzipped them, and then used a more efficient zip program to re-zip the files. I believe he said that the load times were significantly faster.

Let me do some digging and see if I can find it again.

Weird.
I remember loving Diablo back before playing any graphics-based MMOs, but that fixed 3/4 overhead and the utter inability to move the camera is just killing me now.
And yet, I still think this game is kinda fun. Go figure

Just thought I'd mention, btw, the following comic was really the primary reason I tried the demo:

I like the fact the camera is static. It's one of the things that hearkens back to Rogue and Nethack, which is what Diablo is a glorified and updated version of.

Just from the description it sounds exactly like Fate (including the way it saves, except you can cast a town portal spell any where and any time).

In Fate the camera angle is fixed, but you can use the left and right arrows to "peak" around corners etc... Anyone tried that?

The only thing I've managed to do with the camera is rotate it from about 3/4 overhead down incrementally to about 1/4, via mousewheel. Couldn't find any other controls for it personally.

I am becoming a bit disillusioned with the game all in all. Mostly this is due to a repetitive feel. Maybe it's because I'm generally taking passive talents but I'm killing things the same way now at level 21 or so as I have been since I nearly started. The enemies haven't really varied yet, and the quests so far have all been identical. The environments do vary a lot, and they are all gorgeous so far, but graphics haven't ever been enough to save a game for me... though I wouldn't mind more lush Estheria levels! (floors 12-15ish) I had a moment of graphical bliss there when a bunch of elemental spirit floaty orb things attacked and the screen was filled with glowy elementally magics, all without my game slowing at all.

Tried to interest a friend in the game but my sales pitch sounded halfhearted even to me, and I'm getting the feeling that so long as you don't really hate the idea of replaying games, you may be best served just replaying Diablo 2 or whatever. Then again, I suppose the $20 price tag justifies some lower expectations. It certainly isn't a bad game.

Note: if you're collecting those 3 rune things through the portals in Estheria, make sure to have them in your inventory when you finish the quest. I had two in my stash due to severe lack of bag space in the game and they remained in my stash. Now as far as I can tell I have no way to get rid of them. :( Maybe I can pull them out of the shared stash onto a mule type character...

Mine was under my AppData folder in Windows 7.

-Hold down the "Windows key" and press R.
-Then type %appdata% and hit Enter
-Then its under Roaming > runic games > torchlight

This is where you would put any mods you downloaded. This is also where it saves screenshots, and your saved game files, which is separate from your shared stash file. Just in case you wanted to backup your save file, then put things in the shared stash, then overwrite the saved file with the backup file to dupe said things. I'm just sayin'....just in case. :P
