I finally read over the class and what it can do. It's basically a hackneyed attempt to "add something new" to third edition D&D in order to move a book. Reception of the class has been mixed to say the least. Is it overpowered? Is it underpowered? Is it a grave sin to throw every the marquis abilities of every class into one single chump munchkin class?

But I wonder, what if it was the only class in a campaign?

That would be very original.. but sadly, I agree ith your analysis of it for other campaigns.

It's the only good way to make an Indianna Jones-style tomb raider. Other than that? No.

Might as well have a skill based system at that point.

I'm convinced it has a place. That place is in an extremely simple, stripped down game of D&D where it serves as your default "adventurer" class. Give everyone a 16 intelligence, and have them roll their other five stats.

It could be useful for the purpose you suggest, but I'm not certin how much appeal such a game would have.
