I took a japanese beetle to the face shield once... needed a new face shield. Better face shield being replaced than face. That was at 55 mph. I can only think that at 75 with no helmet I would have looked like this:

Not quite as uncommon as you think. I've hit grasshoppers or similar sized insects upwards of 11000 feet before as well ...

It's kind of unsettling.

Mountain road would be my guess.

A part of the helmet campaign in California including the inference that people that were too stupid to wear a helmet were too broke to have insurance, and the public was paying for their medical bills because of it.

LOL.

Silent Ball is when the students sit on their desks and throw a tennis ball around the room without speaking. If they speak they are out. If they drop the ball they are out. If they throw it badly, meaning out of reach, they are out. If they hit a sitter they are out. If they fall off their desk they are out.
I am the Ref, they can not argue with the ref or they are out the next game, but for the most part I have the other kids vote on "bad throw" or "could have caught" and they usually are ok with the class vote. They get to play silent ball by earning points in class. Behavior, good answers, good discussion starters will get a class points. When they get to 10 points they can play a game before class starts as a break kind of thing. The winner gets candy.

I change the strategy up as we go; One handed catches, One handed catches no backboards meaning using your body, throw with your non-dominant hand, quicksies. Quicksies are catch and release immediately. It is a fun game and the kids love it.

The Problem with this game is probably the idea of falling off a desk, so it will probably be banned shortly.

I am a plethora of games to play, but this seems to be their favorite.

That sounds like lots of fun. Do you play "Heads Up 7-Up?" That was my favorite reward game to play in school. Of course, I almost never got picked. Still fun though.

We do play 7-up, but they like "Murder" and "No Way Crochet" the most.

Murder is where I have them sit in a circle in chairs and each kid gets a playing card. I always have the Ace of Spades ready for this game. The kid who gets this card has to wink at his victims, if you are winked at you are out and you give me your card and that is a kill for the murderer. If you think you know who the murderer is you can guess but you pay me your card. If you are right you get candy and the game is over, if you are wrong that is another kill for the murderer. I have 25 in my smallest class, so usually we play till the murderer gets 5 kills.

No Way Crochet is where I have a tape line going down the center of my classroom. The kids stand with the line running between their legs with one foot on each side of the tape. When I say the word "No" they have to hop to the right of the line. When I say "Way" they hop to the left of the line. When I say "Crochet" they have to hop with the line running between their legs again. It progressively gets faster as I talk. Usually many kids mess up at this point. When there are about 6 kids left I say "OK" and they have to turn around on the line and land in the Crochet position. Now they still play with "No" on their right and "Way" on their left, but backwards on the line until I say "Ok" again.

It is fun watching this game.

Ooooo! I totally forgot about "Murder!" That game was way fun!
Never heard of the second game but it sounds like a great way to get some energy out. Cool.
No wonder your students respect you so much!

Motorcycle crashes are very common, and especially dangerous when the driver isn't wearing a helmet.

Society is better off with less people getting injured or sick, and those people are better off too. There should be disincentives to prevent people doing stupid things, when they are cost-effective and not too intrusive. It's not unreasonable for people to wear helmets or seatbelts.

I disagree. I believe society is better off when people are allowed to face the full concequences of their actions. I also believe that society would be better off without those who would weed themselves out. The guy who rides without a helmet and splats his brains out- not my problem unless its my car he damaged. Then his insurance covers my loss or my insurance covers what isn't. Why do we need to bubble wrap everything for people?

Define "very common".

You're moving the goalposts. A "disincentive" isn't the same thing as outright mandating or banning.

No one here has convinced me that any goverment should be able to tell someone that they *must* wear a helmet. If someone chooses to accept the risk in trade for the freedom of getting bugs in their teeth, then so be it...

I don't have a problem with safety training being a requirement for licensing, and that signing a waiver saying that you understand the risks of not wearing a helmet being part of that process.

I just don't get forcing people to wear one against their will once they have acknowledged that they understand the danger of not wearing one.

Apparently some states get this.

I took a junebug in the sunglasses at 75 while wearing an open-faced helmet as a teenager...

Just driving along the road when suddenly someone punched me in the face and the world went yellow :)

I wear a closed face helmet, armored jacked/gloves/boots and jeans as a minimum, but I fully support the right of that jackass in the flip flops, shorts and tank top to take himself out of the gene pool if he really wants to...

And what happens when that person hit in the face with a junebug goes of the road and slams into a pedestrian killing them?

Sorry, but if you're going to ride an 600 lb+ machine , that is inherently unstable, at 70 mph then you need to do everything reasonable to stay in control of the vehicle--including wearing a helmet with a face shield. Your right to be free of helmet while riding does NOT trump my right to be free to walk down the sidewalk.

The same thing that happens when that person is messing with their radio and slams into a kid crossing the road, killing them.
