I hope this one has better software than the Wii does.

Reminds me vaguely of the 4 Swords concept, where you explored a world on your big screen then when down into smaller sections of it on your Handheld.

I don't expect to be the market for a console anytime soon though.

Screw Nintendo. I was suckered into the last two systems. Not again.

My Wii is now just a NetFlix box for my second TV.

I don't regret buying my Wii, and it has proven itself directly as a non-gimmick in a few games. It has, yet again for Nintendo, influenced the entire industry, though where motion control will be in another 20 years still remains anyone's guess. The game library isn't as bad as people make it out to be, given that I think most of those people don't consider games with a production cost under eleventy billion dollars (and I say this as a fan of many eleventy billion dollar games!)

What it hasn't done that I thought it would is A) get more quality innovative games made for it, which Nintendo has shown plenty possible and B) help to answer the question of whether or not the gaming community at large would be happy without the Wii, Move, Kinect, etc and be content with their 1.21 gigavectorpixel upgrade every "generation". If anything they confused it further by bringing all these nongamers into the market, raising business success vs ...traditional gaming success(?), and others.

That said, I haven't looked into this new system yet beyond this thread, and there isn't much to get excited about from my perspective. I certainly won't pass judgement early, but... meh. The PS3 is probably the next console I'm getting regardless.

The biggest problem with the Wii is that you got past Twilight Princess and Mario Galaxy (and Mario Galaxy 2), and then said "Well, what now?"

Way to pull a magic trick on everyone Nintendo.

They managed to outperform 2006 technology? What a great selling point.

edit:

I actually don't understand the grammar of the quote. So I don't know if it will or won't.

honestly i think i'm going to end up skipping the next generation of consoles and sticking with my PC for gaming. I find myself playing and enjoying PC games much more than compared with the console lately.

I might as well. I've done barely any console gaming over the past year. The last big game I played was Mass Effect 2 and nearly every game I am excited about is coming out for the PC as well(not that the next gen lineup is even being thought about right now outside of Nintendo, but honestly...Nintendo has Zelda and Metroid and the last Metroid was a pretty big letdown). So yeah. Unless they really wow me with the next Xbox or Playstation, meh.

This comes to a shock to me because not too long ago I said that PC gaming was dying. lol.

This. That's all I've used my Wii for for a long time, once the gimmick wore off it got retired to my bedroom for Netflix streaming duties. And yeah, have no interest in another new Nintendo gimmick console, they need to stop ****ing with my controller, I want a controller with buttons and joysticks, no other stupid crap.

I really wish I could go back to the PC but I find that to keep up with PC games I needed to update video card, RAM, OS or something at least every year. I miss my mouse :(

Why can't you? I'm sure your PC is just as capable as outputting 720p video as your 360 is.

While Nintendo is starting to push the Wii2, both MS and sony have stated that they think the 360 and ps3 will last till 2014. Guess we'll see if that holds.

Much like the PS2 had releases after the PS3 came out, I expect that's what MS and Sony meant. They can't go another 3 years without new hardware.

The original 360 came out in November 2005. Why do people want a $350 (... $299... $249... $199) device to last 10 years? **** that. I can drop $300 on a comp video card tomorrow and it'll be outdated by the time it gets here.

Okay, if we're going to use the mid-life prices rather than the release prices, let's use the mid-life price for a video card.

A $100 video card will continue to run games five years after you buy it. On top of that, it is still able to run all of the other not-game stuff that you use your computer for. Compared to a $350 device that only runs $50 games, that's a pretty good buy. Even if I'm looking at a $300 video card, I can straddle the cost of that device between my work budget and my playing games budget.

First of all, I'm not using mid-life prices. I stated $350 which was the entry point for the 360 when it came out.

Now, If I were still into majority PC gaming, I'd very likely be looking at upgrading my computer on probably a yearly basis. It'd be very easy to spend $300 on a single video card upgrade, and it's not unrealistic to assume that I'd probably rebuild an entire machine in a couple years time with what would probably equate to $1000 in parts.

I'm just saying that the price points are not so drastic that they necessitate 10 year life cycles.

On the note of money being a concern, no one said we all had to own all three systems, either. You can pick one and be happy with your $300 choice for 5 years, that's still an amazing investment with half the current lifecycle.

As Lenas eluded to, if your standard is console gaming quality, you can play on an older PC an just use lower settings. This would greatly extend the life expectancy of your gaming PC. You would still have the benefit of the mouse and keyboard (and can use the 360 controller for games that need it), and have the video quality equal to the 360 or PS3.

I don't do nearly as much PC gaming as I used to, and I do nearly zero console gaming. My current PC runs the games I play (Everquest 1, Rift, and Portal 2) just fine, with the exception of Portal 2 being a bit stuttery at times, which I believe is actually a sound issue and this is on a 3 year old PC.
