It seems that way to me too, but when the E911 specification was designed, smartphones didn't exist. Also, Federal Regulations require that 95% of handsets be covered. I have no idea what the numbers are, but I'm pretty sure that the percentage of all handsets equipped with GPS and WiFi is pretty is nowhere near 95%.

Maybe someday the Wireless E911 specification will be rewritten and take GPS, aGPS (or one of it's many iterations), WiFi, etc.. into consideration. For the time being these technologies have nothing to do with 911. Thus it is irrelevant to the points I have made in this thread.

It's not irrelevant at all. It's not legally required to store aGPS data, but to provide accurate information in an emergency situation ... which is the intent of e911 ... you need to provide for circumstances where real time data isn't available. And, it's not illegal, so outside your personal objection to the behavior of a phone you don't even own, I'm not seeing a problem.

I have an iPhone, heck, I've got several. You're the one stirring a pot you haven't got a vested interest in, Midge. So, what's the criteria you're using these days to accuse folks of trolling?

Oh yeah, disagreeing with you.

He doesn't need to have the device in order to have a vested interest.

First they came for...

Pretty much does, by definition.

Taskiss,

I wouldn't even call what you were doing disagreeing. You were either being a complete idiot, or you were trolling.

I took the low road....

NinjaEdit for clarification...

Is this where I post the definition and we go off on the tangent of your refusal to recognize it?

Nah, this is where you refuse to acknowledge the commonalities all people share in the digital age where privacy is concerned, whether they own a particular device or use a particular service.

If I had not qualified what interest was involved, you'd be correct... but I did, and that changes the assertion, especially since nobody's privacy was compromised by the local storage of data pertaining to cell tower and wi-fi location information.

One would have to slide down the slope you seem interested in introducing into the discussion to make that connection... a huge "IF" is necessary before any privacy concerns arise.

He's got a personal interest, a special interest, a special concern, or a personal stake, if you will, in where digital privacy rights are headed. He's got a vested interest. If you don't agree, you don't agree, but your disagreement is not based on what "vested" interest means.

As long as "where privacy rights are headed" is your evidence of his personal stake, you're wrong. It's a slippery slope fallacy, Vindicarre. You might think it's relevant, but it's not. He MAY have a vested interest one day, but 'till then he'll have to own one of the devices in question to be vested in the outcome, and he's claimed he doesn't.

Privacy hasn't been compromised by the iPhone storing cell tower and wi-fi locations. A piece of hardware was storing data locally , no additional personal information was transmitted anywhere because of the database stored on the phone. Those are the facts that have been communicated in the news about this issue, so your suppositions about possible future events have no basis for consideration. You're counting chickens before the eggs are laid.

Nope, you've shown me nothing that would disprove the fact that anyone interested in the idea that information regarding their whereabouts is collected or stored has a vested interest in this situation. Tossing out random fallacies doesn't bolster your position. Concern over such information doesn't require any further steps.
I guess I'm done with this.

Yeah, I guess you are, seeing's how you've apparently realized there was no issue is about "privacy concerns" or "where privacy rights are headed".

But hey, stand ready, Vindicarre. Somewhere something might be happening that may someday start something that could possibly be something bad.

Never mind that for the device to perform it's function it spews out unique identifying information to any available wireless carrier's transceiver. Nope, for the device to store it locally (even though the carrier is storing that info too) is the grease on the slippery slope to ... wherever privacy rights are headed.

How about this - if you don't want to carry something that broadcasts your information to others, well, just don't carry it. Stop the foil induced paranoia about the device storing the info locally. It's stupid.

You might want to read that decision released yesterday before you scream up and down there is no slope with regard to digital property rights. Of course, Scalia's Opinion is so well documented as to be amusing for other reasons ...

There's no slope when the information isn't being disseminated.

When you carry a promiscuous electronic device around with you that's constantly spewing unique personal information wirelessly, you may have a problem. I never said you didn't. When carriers can store that info forever and folks can access it without a court order, you may have an even bigger problem. I suggest that those who worry about such things refrain from carrying things like that around on their person.

What you don't have a problem with is that same device quietly storing the same info it's broadcasting. Worrying about that is silly. A drop of water in an ocean kinda silly.
