Just slow-loading today for some reason. It's my image, not one I found.

The best scholarly analysis you're probably going to get is on Neal Krawetz's blog, Hacker Factor.

Quote:
About Dr. Neal Krawetz

Neal Krawetz earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Texas A&M University and Bachelors degree in Computer and Information Science from the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 2002, he founded Hacker Factor Solutions (http://www.hackerfactor.com) where he specializes in non-classical computer forensics, online profiling, and computer security. His research into anti-anonymity technologies combines fields as vast as ergonomics and child development to artificial intelligence and theoretical biophysics. He is the author of three books and numerous articles, and is a popular speaker at local and national conferences. His work experience spans small startup companies, academic and university environments, and large Fortune-100 corporations.

His editorializing aside, the man knows his **** when it comes to image forensics (which he does professionally). I've followed his blog for some time now, and I was hoping (and expecting) that he would do an analysis on this.

I think he overlooked something significant, but he wouldn't have access to the information that explains it.

The ending digit of the Certificate No. It's not the same between the two images he posted.Image

That's clearly a 4.

The finished document ends in a 1.

That seems to be the kind of disparity that will call the authenticity of the document into question for those inclined to do so.

The finished document's number is 10641. The final 1 is a different shade of color, so it's found in a separate mask, as Stathol's link explains.

Does it seem funky? Yes; why the big disparity in ink colors? But whatever.

Right, but it's just weird is my point ...

People will get tripped over it.

Bleh. Kaffis beat me to it. But yeah; the document does appear to have been contrast-adjusted. Basically, everything under, say, the 80th percentile of darkness got floored to black and wound up on the black layer's alpha mask. The remaining 20% stayed on the color JPEG layer as a gray value. That's why what you mostly see on that layer is the fine linework that would have been a lighter grey in the raw scan data.

If you've ever run a threshold filter over a scanned ink document (especially an old, slightly faded one), there's no great mystery here.

Dude, I'm not saying the documented was edited or anything ...

I'm saying that your source's analysis will only provide more fuel to the "fake" side of the argument than intended. No one will count the digits in the Certificate No. box to see that part of it ended up in another mask. They'll just say: see it was changed from a 4 to 1.

Right. I was just confused by why you said he "overlooked" it, that's all. He didn't overlook it; Rather, it's pretty much the whole point of his analysis. I'm sure that some people will continue to insist that they can tell because of the pixels.

But that's all kind of moot. As Krawetz is always swift to point out, image forensics only establish whether the image itself is authentic, not whether the subject of the image is authentic. I.e., even if there were absolute, incontrovertible proof that the PDF image is an authentic, accurate depiction of the paper original, anyone who so wishes can choose to believe that it's a perfectly real photo of perfectly real, but forged document.

True. We need either a time machine, or a mute button. I'm leaning toward the latter.

This site had more of the coverage, both in the text and in the embedded link: http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2011/05/wh ... ailed-24h5

I was quite amused. I liked the "Now we're back at square one" quote, the fake trailer, and the ribbing of Michelle Obama by the President. :)
