There so very limited applications (that I find acceptable) for a microwave that I really can't justify the counter space. About the only things I would use it for are thawing meats, melting butter and maybe cooking beans/corn occassionally. I don't like the taste of anything else done in the MW.

Microwaves aren't for cooking...they are for heating things you buy already cooked. Especially useful when you can't cook.

My microwave doesn't sit on the counter. Its mounted over my stove and doubles a hood/fan.

Million and one uses. Perhaps most important... POPCORN!!

I am a weird old-school guy... I buy kernels and popcorn oil and do it in a pot on the stove top.

You go, Hop. We don't have one, either - had one two houses ago, but the last house had one built in (that stove/fan thing), so we got rid of it. New house doesn't have one, or much counter space for one, so we've been doing without for the past 8 months. Kind of odd - makes re-heating leftovers on buffet night kind of a challenge (especially given the size of the stove).

And, yeah, old-fashioned popcorn is the best.

Room temperature butter is soooo much better on grilled cheese sammiches than margarine ever thought of being!!

I am sure it is, the problem is that grilled cheese are a spur of the moment thing for me so my butter is never room temperature when I want/need it to be. Essentially here is how it goes...

Me: "Nothing sounds good..."
Me2: "What's in the fridge again?"
Me: "Italian bread, mustard, ketchup, pickles, soda, milk, cheese slices..."
Me2: "You fool! We have bread and cheese!?"
Me: "Yeah, and?"
Me2: "GCS MOFO!"
Me: "Oh hell yes!"

Get a butter bell... keeps butter fresh at room temp for about 2 weeks. Put half a stick in at a time. Half a stick of butter is less than 50 cents, you'll end up spending about $10 a year to keep real butter on hand.

You lost me here. I absolutely despise thawing meat in the microwave. I will never thaw meat in a microwave again.

My uses for a Microwave:
Popcorn (popcorn machines are better though)
Microwave Burrito's (if I do not have time to put them in the oven)
Canned Vegetables (never for fresh)
Hot dogs (if I do not have time to cook them the right way)

Since I live alone all of my meats are perpetually frozen and I don't thaw them out til I get home. A microwave would make this ever so much easier.

They barely qualify as meat, the only time that I microwave them is if I am out of sammich meat, and I have less than 5 minutes before I need to be out the door. I prefer to grill them, but if I cannot do that I pan fry them, and if I cannot do that they get microwaved.

Um, I don't see why no one has mentioned the most useful function of a microwave, and that is to reheat leftovers. I've lived for periods without a microwave, and reheating everything in the oven or on the stovetop gets old fast. Plus the microwave does a better job with most things.

And since you can get a used microwave for about 10$... why not?

I don't think I have ever tasted butter...or maybe I did, and didn't know it. I use margarine, if I need any at all.

If you've eaten in a decent restaurant, you've tasted butter.

Could have been more clear, I guess. But, yeah, it's a pain, especially trying to go through all those leftovers that we accumulate at once.

Then again, Amanar, I think many people just don't eat leftovers anymore. Heck, we plan for leftovers when cooking meals for the week, etc., and not having a microwave has put a crimp in that. It's not the money, for us (althought a $10 microwave would scare me a bit, if I'd stop to think about it) - it's a space issue. Kitchen is not all that large or set up well to put a microwave in anywhere. I guess we haven't yet reached that tipping point of feeling that we need one, although I acknowledge it would make life easier in certain ways.

A handy use I've found for a microwave is cooking my egg in the morning. I have this little dish bowl thing that, when an egg is cracked in it and nuked for about 35 seconds, comes out in a perfect circle that fits on my english muffin. Very convenient!

Years ago, I was getting a degree in nutritional biochemistry from an Ivy League university. All of us learned the biochemistry of hydrogenated oils (ie. margarine) caused the formation of fatty acids that do not occur in nature. Those non-natural fatty acids were tracked and ended up in places in the cell that they were not meant to be. When we got those results, all students and professors stopped using margarine.
