I'm going to be buying my daughter a netbook. Anyone have any suggestions for a good one? I'd like to keep it under 300 and it needs a webcam built in. I've been researching but want to know if anyone has one they would recommend.

The Eee PC gets a lot of love on my local LUG (various models).

Yeah. Checking out Newegg and Tigerdirect, it seems to be a popular model. Lot's of referbished ones as well.

Netbooks are a dying industry. I wouldn't get one.

iPad! I find mine way more useful than a netbook would be. Much better battery life, too.

I'd also second buying a first-gen iPad, can probably get them on the cheap now. They can do everything your daughter would want to do on a netbook, while likely being easier for her to use. Not to mention being more portable, which is the entire point of a netbook in the first place.

The main reason I need the cam is so she and I can video chat/skype after she moves. She also loves to play the SIMS so I'll want to put that on there as well.

Yeah.

I love my first Gen, and it's great.. But you won't get the camera, if that's important to you.

I'd estimate we'll start seeing 2nd gen refurbs popping up here in another few months, though. Facetime HD on the new iPads is pretty awesome, I have to say.

Looking around...I may just spend 50 bucks more and get her a regular laptop. Found an ACER on newegg for 349.00

It's over your proposed budget, but the HP Pavilion DM1Z ($450 new) is one of the best-reviewed netbooks I can find.

I'll second Eee PC from Asus. However, mine is a $500 job that is more of a very small notebook than a netbook...complete with discrete nvidia 310 512MB graphics, 2GB RAM, dual core hyperthreaded processor, and HDMI out...overkill for your daughter. The smaller 10" ones are apparently still rather peppy for netbooks, but lack the HDMI out and discrete video solution, which she doesn't need anyway.

(Dragon Age 2 actually runs very playably on my netbook at 1366x768).

We bought my daughter an Acer for about that price and it is absolute crap man. I added RAM to the SOB and even on a fresh load of the OS... it still runs slower than my old P1 laptop running with 64Mb of RAM.
