Some of the Detroit suburbs also have high numbers of functionally illiterate: 34 percent in Pontiac and 24 percent in Southfield.

“For other major urban areas, we are a little bit on the high side… We compare, slightly higher, to Washington D.C.’s urban population, in certain ZIP codes in Washington D.C. and in Cleveland,” she said.

Tyler-Ruiz said only 10 percent of those who can’t read have gotten any help to resolve it.

The report will be used to provide better training for local workers.


I wonder where the other cities ranks, and more importantly...how is their self esteem doing? :)

When I was really young, at the airport my dad used to tell me that I'm going to Detroit. I'd get super upset and nearly throw a fit before he said he was just joking.

How on earth do you wind up with 47% (That's approx. HALF) of the population of a city being functionally illiterate? How does that even happen?

We obviously aren't spending enough money on education in Detroit. Or we are spending too much cause these people are able to skate by. Or they are dropping out which in that case screw them and no wonder Detroit is ****.

I thought that most of literacy was established during grades 1-5. Surely children between 6-10 are going to school on a regular basis? How can they possibly not be learning how to read at school during this time? I know students drop out around 14-16, but everything they would need to know to be functionally literate would have occurred during elementary school. My son is at the end of third grade and he can read prescription labels, instructions, and without a doubt could fill out housing forms or welfare forms or whatever he needed to if he had to just based on a third grade education.
Based on these premises, I find it absolutely insane that almost half of the population of Detroit has somehow wound up with less than a third grade education?? Wtf?

That's messed up. Seriously.
I read the comment section on the article and someone mentioned about politician's keeping their constituency ignorant as a means of political advancement......it really makes you wonder. There is no good reason why almost half of the population is functionally illiterate...absolutely no excuse at all. If children are going to school, AT THE VERY LEAST, they should learn to read and write and add and subtract. Even a retarded person can perform those simple actions. You would almost have to be purposefully stunting someone's growth and preventing them from learning...especially since children are naturally curious and eager to learn how to read and write at an early age. Someone must be actively discouraging them...which leads to the whole parenting aspect, or rather, the lack thereof.

Khross has been pointing out that same notion (ignorant populaces bolster the political influence and power of the politicians) for a while. It's his biggest criticism for public education, that it's a conflict of interest.
