As a new Senate privacy panel considers the data collected by iPhones, Androids and BlackBerrys, the Department of Justice is reminding lawmakers that it needs Internet providers to store more data about their users to help with federal investigations.

Current law doesn't require those Internet service providers to "retain any data for any particular length of time," although some already do, said Jason Weinstein, deputy assistant attorney general at the DOJ's Criminal Division. And many wireless companies — which must collect some data — also "do not retain records that would enable law enforcement to identify a suspect's smartphone based on the IP address collected by websites the suspect visited," he noted in prepared testimony.

"Those records are an absolutely necessary link in the investigative chain," Weinstein told the panel.

I know, I know, if you're not doing anything wrong you've got nothing to fear...

It seems to me there should be a decent compromise point between "complete anonymity" and "complete big brother".

It should be 99% towards the anonymity side. Most "criminals" are just downloading the wrong computer files, effectively hurting nobody.

Proposing rules that make your job much easier is to be expected. I may grumble, but I'm not going to come down too hard on a guy trying to find ways to accomplish his task easier. What matters is how the rest of us respond to his request - legislators in particular.

It's why checks and balances are so important. Hopefully the congresscritters respond appropriately.

I've not seen that to happen too often in my lifetime, especially we don't demand it.

It isn't because the government wants to learn. Apple and Google are simply the companies most effected.

The Apple/Google things makes no sense to me.

There are already so many was for people to be tracked. It boggles my mind why this thing (probably because it's high profile and some politicians want a little time to look like they do work.) is getting the spotlight. I only first started using a cell phone a couple years ago, because my thought was always that if I wanted to be contacted, I'd be at home. I used to juoke that it was really because the government could track you via your cell phone, but it wasn't a complete joke. You can be tracked, but it's not common knowledge apparently. When I tried to explain that, people would just say I was being paranoid.

You can be tacked with credit card usage to. All kinds of agencies, private and public (NSA), track all kinds of things you do. Where's the outcry for privacy?

There is a ginormous difference between collecting 'information' (i.e. google, etc...) and collecting the kind of information that can be used as evidence to arrest or prosecute someone.

It's the nature of the internet. It's not completely safe. If anyone is surprised, they can get off.
