I thoroughly enjoyed it, casting was spectacular, acting was good to almost great. Even Stan Lee's cameo had me chortling. Branagh did a very good job directing and yes, the movie was half an hour too short, at least.

I was amused, at least half the audience left before the credits finished. Most of the rest of the audience was looking at them like, "Huh, it isn't over yet."

Here's prayers for Anthony Hopkins to remain on this realm for many years. He just keeps getting better with age.

I didn't notice Stan Lee this time. I wonder how I missed that?

It was good, no Iron Man though.

Saw the movie Wednesday after work.

Don't bother with the 3D, it was phoned in at best, and done in post rather than shot in 3D, AFAICT.

However, the movie was pretty outstanding. Thor's a funny character for me. I should like him, as I like Norse mythology and such. However, they always saddle him with a huge cast of Norse name-dropping, which makes it a pain in the *** to follow, or they stick him on Earth where I always get the sense of, "why the hell isn't he wiping the floor with everything?"

This movie handled both admirably. It kept the Norse cast to a manageable number (9 named characters) of highlights, and then the plot allowed earth-boundiness to make sense.

So it took a character that I'm generally "meh" about at best, and turned it into an entertaining movie I'd watch again. That's a success in my book.

Loved how they handled the language; it was that step removed from modern usage and idiom without going all the way to "Why hath thou..." territory. It was distinct enough that I could definitely tell which speech bubbles were in the flowery script, as it were, without making me think I was watching Shakespeare.

Hemsworth had a fantastic charisma that suited the character beautifully, and did a good job of delivering the flowery lines smoothly and naturally while keeping a straight face. He definitely wore the role like a well-tailored suit. I'm with 'Skee, though, I don't see anything anytime soon stacking up to the way Downey was just born to play Stark. That's not a slight on those who don't equal that, though.

Loki was portrayed very well. I was quite satisfied with both the writing and the performance in that role. Everything was very much in character for the odd logic behind machinations, motivations, and relationships with Loki. It was a very good introduction for him to (properly so) feature in the formation of the Avengers.

Spoiler:
What was the deal with Loki though. Is he really a Frost Giant in the comics? That seemed rather odd to me.

Spoiler:
Loki I think was always a half frost giant, too full blooded frost giant in both the comics and mythology

This is correct.

As a side question, which comic book character's back story has been the most ret-conned? My first guess is Powergirl from DC.

Heimdall was the definition of bad-ass in that movie.

I'll agree with Talya on that.

Spoiler:
As defined by Loki asking if Odin ever had cause to fear him. Heimdall's answer was basically, No, because he is the King. The gods had to ask permission of Heimdall so they could use the rainbow bridge, not as a formality, but because Heimdall could enforce it when he said no.

Really, taking any of the DC characters whose backstories get retconned by Crises is kind of a gimme.

More interesting, I think, would be excluding those.

Finally got a chance to see it today.

Really enjoyed it. What I found the most impressive was that IMHO this was probably the hardest movie of the rash of comic films lately to pull off. I mean, we're talking about trying to make all the grandeos nature of the norse mythology seem real and "fit" into the modern world. Definately a tall order, and they pulled it off amazingly well.

Chris Helmsworth did an AMAZING job at Thor. Completely believable as the god of thunder without being hokey. And Anthony Hopikins was incredible as Odin.

Reflecting back after seeing this movie a week or so ago, and thinking about some of the other comments here, I think Heimdall might be my favorite character in the movie.

I say that having no clue what he was 'supposed' to be like (never read the comics,etc...), but they did a great job making that character seem mysteriously omnipotent (or something)...

We really enjoyed it.

But... Hawkeye wasn't blond! And I'm much more used to him with a recurve bow. (But they got his attitude down.)

They definitely made some choices with Hawkeye that were analogous to choices made with The Ultimates' Hawkeye.

As such, I don't expect to see him in purple for the Avengers.

I wouldn't expect the purple. I liked the purple bow as a compromise. I didn't read any Ultimate Avengers, so I'm not up on the changes to his character from there.
