I guess I'd still be playing football if my body would allow it, instead I play softball and golf. I'm wondering how many of those who are saying they don't "get" golf spend much time playing any sport.

I think a significant percentage of the glade populace has an aversion to the Great Golden Orb, so this probably isn't a place to find a lot of support for any outdoor activity =)

I play softball on my brother's team. I love the competition and there is just something about running down a flyball in the outfield.

I prefer my sport playing to be more physical, more running and getting dirty. I'd rather shag flyballs any day rather than play a round of golf.

I have no aversion to the sun, and I love being outside. I just would prefer something other than a glorified walk in the park followed by drinking.

You can't shag fly balls alone (unless you're really fast).
What I don't "get" about golf is the fanaticism and reverence that many players have about it. I know you get that in every sport, but I think that's part of the attraction for many golfers.

You golf at public courses, it is fun with your buddies and a proletarian albeit expensive activity.

You golf at private country clubs, it is also fun with your buddies, but considerably more elitist and expensive.

That is only part of golf of course, it has a slew of aspects - as do most sports.

I don't even know about expensive, Micheal. There are plenty of places in, for example, Sacramento, where you can play for $10-15. That's pretty cheap entertainment for 3, 4, 5 or even 6 hours.

The expense does not just involve the green fees Vindi. Equipment, shoes, fitting your schedule around available tee times, and the post round social aspects can make it a very expensive sport. You can start off relatively moderately, but to play and improve you will continue to shell out large sums. We talk about a whole month of an MMORPG only costing $15, but if we came into it without a computer and internet access, the start-up costs to play that inexpensive past-time would be fairly substantial.

Do you continue to improve your game? Or is that one of your goals?

A lot of guys just go out there to enjoy the outdoors, knock the ball around and don't care what their score is, its the walk in the woods with buddies that brings them in.

I don't, but I do a lot of pushups, situps, and running, which I still consider more entertaining than golf. I probably still could play hockey if my schedule permitted.

Most of the serious golfers I've met keep upgrading their gear and taking a lot of lessons from pros because they think it helps their game. Since you don't upgrade your equipment, I'll bet you spend more time on the mental aspect of figuring out what works and what doesn't. Most of the serious golfers I've met could use a little more of that discipline. Do you ever pay for lessons or do you learn by watching others? Or something else entirely?

You seem to be one of the rare rational ones who take the game seriously without feeling the need to invest heavily in it.
