Honor Harrington isn't terribly hard linguistically, but it does require you to have a basic appreciation for what space is like to understand what's going on. It's about the only sci fi series I ever read where space events, especially combat, take place at realistic ranges.

I only read erotic fiction. Where do you suppose that falls on the grade level scale?

Well, I am combining them, because to me both are part of overall comprehension of the work. Perhaps this is wrong, but when I think of a reading "grade level" I think of at what level would they be able to comprehend and have a reasonable expectation of fully understanding the work. Being able to understand a complex subject matter is part and parcel with that IMHO.

I understand there is a game show currently in production entitled "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth-Grader?".

Yeah. David Weber has a good grasp on how mindbogglingly huge space is.

And much <3 for the badassness of the Manties.

And I can't tell you how many times I wanted to stab High Ridge and his cronies in their stupid faces.

Is it Star Trek fan-fiction?

I like the way he doesn't portray the Manties' enemies as stupid or pointlessly evil (at least, on other than an individual basis) but more as people that can be dealt with and, for the most part, reasoned with.

Even when they are being colossally stupid, there's generally a logical reason why, instead of it just being a matter of "hurf durf, Peeps/Solies/whatever are all morons who can't build good missiles!"

Sort of, but even that has a good, in-universe explanation for how they got to be so fat and lazy.. and not all of them are so complacent.

Well, yeah. And the reason they're being douchey is also explained. But they're just coming off as tools. Which, really, is exactly what they are.

And in January, when their fleet gets to Manticore, they're so gonna get smoked.

Yes, at least the first one. Frankly, I thought Weber got a bit carried away with destroying the entire orbital infrastructure of Manticore in the attack since the means was a bit deus ex machina albiet not obviously so, and becuase he's used that ploy before I think at least twice. When he's needed to create problems for Manticore, he just has an attack on a shipyard succeed.

The Solarians are the hardest power to understand in the entire series because they have the least historical parallel on earth. The way they act makes sense in terms of his reasoning for it, but there's nothing in real life to compare it to except maybe the Roman Empire, and that's far, far removed from the Napoleonic/WWI/WWII-allegory Weber has going on with everyone else.
