Recommend a video card to replace my aging pair of GTX-285s. Single card solution would be preferred ...

Do you have a budget? The HD 6990 and the GTX 590 seem to be on top right now, and both are $7-800.

Well then Tom's Hardware charts would lead me to believe that the AMD HD 6990 or Asus GTX 590 would be about equal, your choice in brand being the biggest difference. They're both head and shoulders above any competition from the looks of it.

Wait.... Khross is using something other than ATI? What happened to all those lectures you gave me?

Hey Khross if you are looking to get rid of one of those GTX-285s I'd happily accept one. I'll even pay shipping.

That was when ATi was clearly superior. When GTX285s were available for SLI, they were the best option for the money.

Most of the newer higher end Nvidia cards (GTX 570, 580, 590) will not pass HD-Audio, they will only do 7 channel LPCM. No idea if that matters to your or not.

Same boat your in want to replace my GTX 285, but want to pass HD-Audio to my receiver, best Nvidia I can find that will do that is the GTX 560 Ti..Want something a little more ballsy than that though.

The witcher 2 doesnt play very nice with my 285...

Why would your video card need to process HD *audio*?

You're not getting a 256GB SSD?

I'm thinking about spending my Newegg birthday credit plus about $20 of my own money towards the stock speed version of that EVGA card. I'm a little concerned about the PSU requirements. Ostensibly, all of those GTX 560 Ti cards want a 500W PSU minimum, and looks like they can pull ~260W by themselves when running at full throttle (real-world number pulled from Tom's Hardware).

My PSU is the stock 500W Antec that comes with the Sonata III case. I generally regard Antec's PSUs as being reliable, with accurate ratings. And I've never had one of the Sonata-bundled PSUs flake on me. Even so, it seems slightly iffy. The CPU is a quad Phenom II 810 (TDP 95W). So if both were running full tilt, that's theoretically no more than 385W. That still leaves a little room for chipset power, miscellaneous loads, hard drive, etc. However I haven't figured out the 12V rail loadings, and honestly I'm not even sure if this PSU is multi-rail or single rail.

What do you think?

Khross,

Thank you for buying and building my new PC. It will be a fantastic gift to celebrate my recent college graduation. Shall I PM you the correct address so you can ship it here?

Thanks again,

Caleria

Khross:

Are you overclocking your processor? My 2600 is overclocked to 4-5GHz (can't remember exactly).

Correct! My bedroom/office is my HTPC Room, pc running to a receiver to a 32" LCD, blu-ray in PC, Im not happy currently with my X-FI passing the audio via optical.

Khross,

560Ti much an upgrade over the 285? Still see the damn prices on those cards (285's) and its like really? Thinking its time for a DX10/11 video card..
