Necroposting again ... two new trials:

Grand Teton Brewing Co's Trout Hop (Black IPA)
Spoiler:
Image
and The Lost Abbey's Serpent's Stout (Imperial Stout)
Spoiler:
Image

As promised, the finish on Trout Hop was both sour and bitter - a bit too much so for my taste. The overall experience was great, right up until I realized I didn't much care for the aftertaste with which I was left. The Serpent's Stout, on the other hand, left nothing to be desired. It wasn't The Abyss, but not every beer can hope to aspire to such heights (depths?).

What? I didn't tell you about Deschutes Brewery's The Abyss? Shame on me. It was so good, my beer geek friends and I each bought a bottle to set aside for a year so we can enjoy the effects of bottle aging about which we've been told so much. This Imperial Stout left no doubts in our minds as to why it's ranked #1 in it's class by BeerAdvocate.

Sorry for the necropost!

I just came across this last night purely by accident at Total Wine. Sadly, there was only 1 6 pack left.....to drink, or to keep for it's being collectable?

Image

I didn't know it was weweased (unlike wodgja or wowderwick) in 1999, and we-weweased in 2009 for the 40th anniversary.
If you're unable to find it locally, you can still buy it online from the brewery itself http://www.blacksheepbrewery.com/beers/holy_grail_bottled_beer/.

I think I'll go back to scouring another Total Wine store for a 6 pack to drink.

Picked up a six-pack of that one a couple of years back and loved it. Hope you're able to track down some more.

In other news, my most recent new beer acquisition:
Spoiler:
Image

A: Medium amber in color with a nice light tan head on top. Looks nice.

S: There are some mean hops in this guy. Huge oily resiny pine and citrus aroma. A good bit of caramel in there, as well as maybe a touch of sweet onion.

T: Good touch of caramel, followed by pine and citrus, and a falcon punch of bitterness. Resiny, piney, and mean.

M: Medium in body with an oily texture. Carbonation seems about right. I feel like a need a tongue scraper to get the hop oil off my tongue.

O: Overall I tend to like my Imperial IPA's a touch on the sweeter side. This tastes great, but the punch packed by the bitterness is almost just a bit too harsh. Still a good beer, and I am glad I tried it.

That's right ... a "falcon punch of bitterness".
Pretty decent taste, but definitely not worth the $17.97 pricetag. For a better beer at approximately half that, I'd much rather have a Maharaja or Sublimely Self-Righteous.

I took a tour of the Stone Brewery and Gardens on Sunday. Awesome place and the tour concludes with free, amazing Stone beers. Food was overpriced though.

Like the WTF quite a bit, haven't cracked the Dragoons yet. Will report back after I've given it a go.

My most recent craft purchase. I enjoyed, and recommend it.

I think I'm obligated to get that.

My drink of choice last night was Mongo IPA (Port Brewing Co). Haven't tried it out of the bottle yet but draft is very good.

Weather around here hasn't yet turned into "summer", so I'm holding back on the switch from stouts to IPAs. I'll get there soon, though :)

It was summery this weekend here. I had a Ranger IPA.

Went out tonight, and went to Guinness, the old standby when a bar has no good IPAs.

Guinness on tap. I haven't had one in so many years. It was one of my big weaknesses back when. Now I want one.

This is my routine as well, although sometimes I'll have a good hefeweizen too.

Follow-up on the Dragoons - very disappointed. It tasted weak and flat. I suspect it might be related to the "Live Ale! Keep Refrigerated" label which was apparently overlooked by the staff who shelved it warm, but in any case ... it didn't make a very good impression :(

Had this one last night, organic wheat beer. Really nice summer beer, very light and crisp. Reminded me a bit of Hoegaarden.

Belgian witbier style > all. Allagash Double White is excellent in the summer.

Added to the list of yummy Black IPAs / Cascadian Dark Ales : Uinta Brewing's Imperial Black IPA - Dubhe.

Seriously good. Oh, and it's brewed with hemp. Dunno what effect that's supposed to have, but the beer is verra nice.

My latest IPA discovery is a double from O'Dell : Myrcenary.
Great stuff. Read some of the reviews or just go get some for yourself. A "must" for hopheads.
