I have tried two different models of self cleaning litter boxes.

Both of them were loud, prone to break downs, and not very effective... and ultimately required more attention and time than it would have taken to just clean the litter box.

If/When I get another cat (kitten), I will make every effort to train it to use the toilet in the spare bathroom.

Taamar have you looked at any of the automatic/self-cleaning litter boxes?

I have, though it's been a few years. Last time I checked there wasn't a covered model large enough to accomodate our enormous feline. He's slimmed down a little and maybe they make bigger ones now. I also toyed with the idea of http://www.catgenie.com/?gclid=CMaxj7Sd950CFRcjawodBl8MpA.

Here is a video of a commercial product called "Litter Kwitter". I just show it as an example of how this is done. I've read articles online of people just using plastic bags and a plastic bowl just large enough to sit under the seat of the toilet. You slowly lower the litter level until you finally remove it completely and put the water back on in the toilet.

The reviews on the catgenie are mixed...sounds like its amazing as long as it doesn't malfunction.

Rather pricey though.

We tried training our two cats to use the toilet; one did for a while, and it was pretty cool. But, he kind of lost interest in it when he became an outdoor cat again.

Funny thing is, we moved three times after that, and at least the first two of those, he used the toilet on the first day we moved in. It was really weird, I walked past the bathroom in the new house ... and there's my cat, on the toilet. WTH? You haven't done that in four years, and now you're gonna start?

Didn't keep it up, though, just seemed to be marking it as his toilet bowl or something.
