Why care if the rating system is not scientific?

Isn't the real goal to control your pain? Whatever number you rate it...it truely doesn't matter...the goal is 0 or a level that is tolerable...if you don't get to that point then you aren't getting the help you need. Every doc has a different opinion and method to treating pain. If you go to one and he doesn't help you, then you seek a second, third or as many opinions as it takes to get the relief.

Healthcare is only as successful as you are willing to make it for yourself.

Sorry you experienced what you did, Elmo, but that ER was wrong in their diagnosis for you. Did you continue to seek another opinion? Were you able to find another doc that tried to actually help you? I hope so.

Well, the United States has retarded, often barbaric regulations when it comes to pain management and the medical profession.

That said, you're all wusses ... even, Numbuk.

Better point of reference. Doctor: "If this is a one (pinch) and this is a ten (stab), how would you rate your pain?"

Elmo, morphine, double tap.

But the medical community would disagree with me.

The worst I've ever had to suffer through is having the hair between my pubes and my belly button torn out - slowly.

I know it can get worse, but I don't see how.

After sinus surgery, I woke up with a murderous headache that felt deep inside my brain. I feel I judged it fairly.. was either a 7 or 8. I definitely had room to go, but yeah it was a teeth-clenched, oh-god-make-it-stop-soon-or-I'm-not-gonna-last kinda deal.

Then the morphine drip got turned on and after I woke up the second time I felt great for a whole day!

Despite the humor in that chart Mr. Mus posted I think it's pretty close to how I rate things. :p Yeah, your imagination can certainly take it beyond that 10 if you get creative, but it's not terribly practical to do so... plus I'm not sure really how much farther you can go without simply passing out.

I'm just hoping that some doctor will eventually find a painkiller that works on me...

Every couple of years something comes along and makes me reevaluate the pain chart. First it was getting knifed through the hand in high school. Next was discovering that I'm immune to novacaine while getting a tooth drilled. Finally I had outpatient surgery last year and had to spend the whole time biting on a towel since whatever they gave me didn't do a damn thing...

I guess I'll call that my new 7. Can't wait until the scale gets adjusted again ;)

I rarely take pain killers of any kind. Even when recovering from back surgery, I never pressed the magic button, and mostly refused the orals.

Even the OxyCodone they sent me home with remains unused.

My problem is that I have to take so much of it for it to be effective, that the side effects aren't worth it.

the worst pain I have ever felt... legitimate pain was having 6 teeth pulled all at once (all 4 wisdoms and the teeth that they shattered as they grew in sideways).

After that was self inflicted... laying in a tattoo chair as I got my lower neck done. I swear to god the **** artist was trying to drill for oil.

Up until recently the worst pain I've endured was giving birth to my son. I won't go into the gory details, but from the 26th of May through the 10th of June I was not feeling all that great! :(

On the pain scale my top end is dry socket. Followed by kidney stones, followed by childbirth. When rating pain I like to mess with them by saying "worse than lemon juice in a cut, not as bad as hand in a deep fryer". It gives them an accurate idea of the pain, but also of what sort of person I am.

I once was given morphine(dilaudid) for a headache that was really little more than an annoyance. I had just been admitted, and the nurse asked me if I needed anything. I asked for a couple of tylenol or something cause I had a bit of a headache.

She comes back like 20 minutes later with a syringe with some stuff. I said "What's that" she told me it was dilaudid, and I said "Oh, will that make my headache go awuhhhh wheeee!"

I am going to say something that usually makes people in the medical profession wince (because it is usually a load of @&!%); I have a high pain threshold. To support this I can say that I have my son with no pain meds and minimal discomfort, gotten several teeth filled without novacaine because the drilling was only mildly uncomfortable and I dislike several hours of numbness, and never taken any of the pain meds they sent me home with after two major surgeries.

However, I think I had a '10' once when my gallbladder went bad. I could barely move. I also refused to go to the ER because I literally felt I would die, so I did not want to die in an ER waiting room. (I knew what the local ER was like, and I knew that I would not be seen for 12 hours at a minimum.) The GI doc I visited the next morning panicked when he saw me saying I was the sickest person he had ever seen in his office. The offending organ was out within three hours.
