I think you must speak to Kaffis to understand what Doom approval means.

Sure, the plot is a little weak, but it's a 100 minute movie, and it's Green Lantern. It's a solid origin story movie.

I got what I was looking for out of it. No more, but no less. And GL is my go-to hero for DC comics.

I got well animated, diverse, and bizarre alien lanterns in the crowd scenes. I got the GL/Abin Sur origin done justice. I got about 5 minutes of Sinestro showing Hal the ropes (not enough to really do that mentorship relationship justice, but as Khross said, 117 minute movie, and they felt they had to lead off with a Parallax story). I got the proper sense of Hal's personality in his constructs. The cheese factor I feared from the trailers (seriously, WB, fire your editor on that one) was kept under a tight enough rein for 95% of the movie.

What I didn't get was a deep, compelling villain, a nuanced and developed characterization of Sinestro, a strictly accurate portrayal of Parallax's nature/origin, or a particularly inventive plot. These factors play heavily in the critical reception, I'm sure, and may serve to limit the breadth of the audience the movie introduces favorably to the character/franchise (compared to, say, Iron Man).

But if you're looking for a comic movie, or especially if you're a fan of GL, the movie will play well with you.

They accomplished a lot, namely sowing the seeds for a possible franchise while hitting the key points and making Hal into Hal. So ...

I approve.

So I have to ask... Ho did you like the laser work and surrounding setups? One of my friends works in laser physics, and built most of the setups for the movie.

All these comic movies this summer makes me think we need to do another comic/hero/villain draft.

Eager to see the movie later this week.

Just got back, I loved it, non-comics types were "meh" about it.

I enjoyed it a lot, and was surprised.

Casting was way better than I expected.

I think the problem is there's a group of indeterminate size that is getting tired of seeing comic book movies. You have to admit that Hollywood has been producing quite a lot of comic book superhero movies lately (which, by the way, is **** awesome).

Spoiler:
One thing I keep coming back to. Near the end, when the three other lanterns pull him back from the sun, were they just watching him, assessing his worthiness, or were they too fearful to face the bad guy themselves? If they were close enough to save him, they were close enough to help him.

Having never seen it before, and with its home video release yesterday, we bought Green Lantern and watched it for the first time.

I'm now wondering why the hell that seemed, at one point today, like a good idea.

I like Green Lantern. I like the mythology, I like the concept, and I even like Ryan Reynolds. But the entire thing was a hot mess, a gigantic, $200 million wasted opportunity.

It probably hurts any DC production that I hold the quality of new works up to the sterling example set by Bruce Timm and co. in their '90s animated works. But I'll touch briefly on the ways I feel the film failed and failed hard:

1. You're making a movie about Green Lantern...and you set 75% of it on Earth.

2. You have a vast, incredible, cosmic entity as your primary villain (which, first of all, Parallax right off the bat? Save something for the sequel, guys), and then shunt him off to the side for an uninteresting, cliched, poorly-written 'evil mirror Hal' analogue.

3. The Green Lantern Corps? Let's not concern ourselves with them...five minutes of introduction and training should be more than enough. What we need are more dull scenes set on Earth!

4. Oh, and characterizations for any of the Corps members? Not in the budget.

5. Good writing? You no can haz. Crappy narration and a lack of interesting story, that's what we have for you!

5b. The one good line in the film, at which both Phe and I justifiably laughed hard, was "I've seen you naked! You think I won’t recognize you because I can’t see your cheekbones?"

6. Watch Green Lantern: First Flight. THAT'S how you do a Green Lantern movie. He's off Earth in five minutes and the rest of it is spent in sexy space combat with space cops and space villains and space...space. IT'S GREEN FREAKING LANTERN. If I want Earth-based stories, this is not where I'm looking. I don't care about Carol Ferris, I don't care about not-Seth Rogan as the best friend guy, I want some freaking space opera.

7. What wasted opportunity. Again, look at First Flight. That's a perfect example of how to use Hal, how to build relationships between him and the rest of the Corps members, how to give them actual uses and functions and interesting personalities. Their take on Sinestro was perfect. Here, Sinestro did nothing but glower at Hal for a couple of minutes and then casually finagle a yellow ring. Character? Pshaw, I saw!

8. Talk about your lack of climaxes. No one in the Corps, the professionals who've been doing this for years, though about routing Parallax close a sun? But Hal can! For, uh, some reason.

Missed, bungled, malformed, a wasted opportunity at every single turn. The whole thing. The *one* good thing, the *one* thing that showed cleverness and ingenuity, were the action sequences in which Lantern powers were used. In those brief instances, the film sparked to life a bit. Outside of that...nothin'.

Honestly, the best thing on the "Green Lantern" disc is the 7-minute preview of the new CGI 'Green Lantern: The Animated Series' coming to Cartoon Network. Don't know that I would have paid $25 for it, but it's definitely the only thing on the disc for which I would, in hindsight, actually pay money.

2, 4, 7, and maybe 8 on an off day, I agree with.

I don't mind Earth-bound Lantern stories. They tend to spend a lot of their time there, after all. Parallax should've been saved for the sequel, though, absolutely. And the Corps was nicely rendered, but poorly introduced and utilized.

Saw it. Thought it was terrible. Easily last place among the super hero movies I've seen this year.

1. Captain America - I thought this was excellent. I was surprised since I had low expectations. 99% of it was him in WWII, perfect! Red Skull was a bit meh. Hydra = Super Nazis!... but otherwise very good flick.

2. Thor - Solid movie. Not great, needed more Asgard. The dude playing Thor was good.

3. X Men First Class. Again solid, not great. More Magneto: Nazi Hunter please.

4. Green Lantern. Completely forgettable and it's a shame. I'm with FarSky: go to space! I dont care about saving the wedding party or whatever that was. No more giant monster blowing up generic city block scenes.

It wasn't an Alan Scott movie, but it wasn't bad ...

Seriously, though, speaking as a non-fanboi, it was a pretty decent movie. My only complaint was that
Spoiler:
in the context of the movie there seemed to be no reason for Sinestro to have donned the yellow ring at the end. Parallax had just been destroyed and Hal had warned of the dangers of the power of fear. Sure, he's the new guy and human to top it off, but he did just single-handedly defeat the big bad that was kicking the collective *** of the rest of the Corps. Shouldn't that have earned him the right to have his words given some serious consideration?

After finally seeing it. It was okay. I’m not familiar with any DC Universe outside of Batman, so I have no prior GL exposure. The idea of harnessing the power of Willpower and Fear in some magical way sounds awfully goofy to me, but I let it slide. The CG outfits make it look like Hal is a floating head.
