The Glade 4.0

I've been watching a lot of Netflix lately.

Two movies I've seen in the last few months, the first was Irréversible, the second was Martyrs.

In Irréversible you have have a director trying to do interesting things with camera work, as well as story told backwards, but unfortunately the movie is over in any real sense after you get half way through. We've already seen the bad guy murdered by an upset boyfriend, we see events transpiring to their meeting, and at the halfway point, unfortunately you're made to sit through a 10+ minute rape scene of Monica Bellucci. The only scene in the movie where the camera never moves, and you have to witness an angel being destroyed. After that, you continue going backwards and it basically turns into a softcore porn for the remaining 40 minutes - can't recommend.

Martyrs, however, I found easier to watch. The story begins revolving around a girl (Luci) who was abused/tortured, escaped, and became best friends with another girl at an orphanage. You fast forward 15 years, and Luci (with her friend in tow) has her eyes set on revenge for the people that hurt her. Can't give any points for plot originality on that one. That said, halfway through the movie there's a pretty big twist which led to a fairly interesting ending. I can recommend this movie, if only to watch once, but you still need to be able to handle some disturbing stuff.

Anyway, the French are hardcore.

12 Monkeys was based on a short french film called La Jetee. I believe one of the 12 Monkeys DVDs has it in it's entirety.

Les Zombis et les Loups-Garous!

Another excellent over-the-top french horror movie is Haute Tension (High Tension). Very intense and gory.

If you haven't yet, check out Le Pacte De Loups (Brotherhood of the Wolf). Excellent Film (although the CGI is a bit dated now). Also containing Monica Bellucci, although in this one she just looks gorgeous without all the 10 minute raping.
