Why don't people value life...no matter what kind?

This has been a stressful day..I'm exhausted, which probably makes things worse. I was on my way to work and there was a turtle in the road. I avoided it then turned back around so I could get him off the road. I had just pulled off the side of the road and some ******* ran it over . I don't understand...there was no reason to do that. /sigh

People are dicks.

Or, more generally, they fear what they don't understand, so they kill it. I was in a park with my kids one time, and we found a lady bug or beetle larvae of some sort. One of those black spiky things that look very scary (all 1/16th inch of it), but are completely harmless. I had it in my hand, was showing it to my kids, and then it fell off onto the table. Five minutes later I heard screaming and squishing sounds from a group of kids. Had to kill it because someone thought it was scary, instead of just letting it meander away.

Same thing for the poor turtle. Heck, they probably don't even see it as "life", just another dumb brute. So, it's either that they fear it and want to kill/dominate it; or, it's simply not alive to their mentaility, and it's just an inanimate target up on the (wind)screen to aim for.

I was taxiing out the aircraft the other day making a radio call and we saw a wee little turtle on the taxi way! Had to make a small turn to get around it, and we let flight service know about the lil' guy so the airport crews could move it. So at least one turtle survived the day!

Ever see how a large subsection of the population treats people in the lower echelons of the service industry? I think truckstop restroom bacteria get more respect. Does it really surprise you that people don't value the life of animals, in the face of that?

I generally agree.

However, I grew up in a rural area. My father always taught me, "Ye do not swerve to avoid an animal. It's too dangerous. Better to hit the animal than somethin' else, like a tree or a telephone pole, or worse yet a car coming the other way. So just go ahead and hit it...unless it's a moose. Never hit a moose, under any circumstances."

My gut reaction is to dodge an animal anyway, but i think from a safety perspective, dad's probably right.

If your choice is a last minute swerve into the ditch, or hit the animal, the animal is indeed safer.

I think the angst here is directed towards people who have every opportunity to safely avoid the animal (stop/slow down/avoid, etc...), but choose to hit the animal intentionally.

I've known people who would drive on the shoulder to hit a squirrel or even a domestic house cat or dog.

Special place in hell...

Maybe the driver did not see the animal? That happens sometimes. Also, like Talya said, sometimes it's safer to hit the animal. We had a woman in a nearby town swerve to avoid a dog in the middle of the road. She had plenty of room but somehow lost control of the vehicle and ran off the road. She was unharmed but her husband was killed. He was in the front seat wearing a seatbelt but since his seat was leaned so far back the belt was unable to save him.

You don't have to "swerve", but you can slow down and make sure you don't hit it.

I'll gently swerve, if I feel I can. If not, I'll hit it. I can't justify wrecking my car for an animal. That said, I don't often hit anything. Although, recently, a fox ran into the road, I swerved, missed him, and ran over a baby fox following it. Momma ran back, looked at it, looked at me, then ran off.

Can't justify an accident for an animal. That said, I'd drive off the side of a volcano before running over a child.

My vegan friends ask me this all the time.

If we weren't supposed to eat meat, it wouldn't be so tasty. But there's no point in harming animals on the road.

My current ran over list:

2 rabbits
a snake
several lizards
possibly a cat (it ran off so I wasn't sure)

Sometimes it just can't be helped, especially if you live in an area with a high animal population and drive a lot at night.

I don't think you should put yourself or other people in danger by trying to avoid animals. I know it can't be avoided sometimes. But in this case, It was a two lane road, not busy with traffic, and I was standing on the side of the road waiting for this one truck to go by so I could grab the turtle. The guy in the truck made no effort to slow down or swerve, in fact, it looked like he aimed for the turtle. The crunch as he ran it over was horrible

That's what I don't understand...this deliberate act.

Some people just get their kicks this way. It's sad, but frankly they probably haven't thought about it much and may not be intellectually prepared with the critical thinking skills to do so. If you did examine this guy's life you'd probably find a lot of other selfishness and thoughtlessness.

I was thinking of this last night in my garden. I had a light on, and insects were collecting. I'm always fascinated by insects, so I was watching them, thinking how many different species there were ... And, that's just the type of curiosity that people who kill random animals on the road are lacking. They have no intellectual curiosity about anything.
