Humane treatment of animals is, I would think, a relatively uncontroversial idea, so why get so worked up when PETA takes the point too far or makes it too bluntly? *shrug* I just don't understand the intensity of the backlash.

The same reason people get worked up at anyone else preaching at them self-righteously?

Actually, it's worse. PETA can't doesn't even have unknowable metaphysics regarding what they're preaching about to argue their interpretation is correct. They basically abuse utilitarian ethics in order to lecture people who, for the most part, know they're full of **** but can't describe precisely why.

You're in good company then. Most people don't have the time or patience to sit around studying rules of logic and systems of ethics and debunking **** like PETA puts out. Nevertheless, the average person has a fairly good bullshit sensor even if they couldn't write a paper on the topic.

PETA is hypocrisy at its best, they enjoy the benefits yet at the same time touts it’s evilness at the same time. They are short sighted and can’t look beyond the glow of their own self righteous, they care for no one but their crusade, no matter the destruction.

The head of PETA herself is diabetic and uses insulin on a regular basis, yet instead of promoting the ethical treatment of animals in laboratories, they want an out right ban on ALL animal testing, the very thing which is saving people’s lives. Shortsightedness at its best…

A couple of years back, they had this huge campaign against Australian wool because we use a method called mulesing to get rid of the skin around the sheep’s tail, so they don’t get eaten alive by flies and larvae. Didn’t matter that this was done to young sheeps (similar to circumcision), and was the best way in which flies didn’t lay eggs under their tail and have the larvae’s eat them alive. So as a result of their “think of the animal”… currently over 3 million sheeps in australia die each year, eaten alive by flies, simply because some idiot in the government decided to go with their stupid logic…

So no, PETA doesn’t love animals, they only use it as a front for their ‘crusade’… This is why many people hate them, because believe it or not, sometimes those who hate them the most are actually animal lovers…

PETA was a good idea, but had a lousy execution. It has filled up with people that love having a soapbox and have to stand on it and pronounce, even when they have nothing to say.

PETA will never be taken seriously if they don't give up the extremism.

That's like suggesting the flat earth society give up the idea that the earth is flat.

They'd have as much success campaigning that lions or wolves give up eating meat as they'll have with humans. We've eaten meat for 200,000 years. Our pre-human ancestores were eating meat 4+ million years ago. That's a hell of a lot of evolutionary momentum to contend with for a "Think of the cute fuzzies!" campaign. Our other primate cousins eat meat, too. We're pretty solidly omnivorous. The very concept that our species should adopt a vegetarian diet is extreme in itself.

Simply put, the animals in PETA are worth less then the animals they're trying to acquire equal human rights for.

And some of us have a near exhaustive knowledge of these particular topics ...

And we still think PETA is primarily useless.

You know, if people never ate meat, I don't think the human race would have survived.

It was all the extra protein in the meat that helped our brains to develop ;)
