I can't find the link to the news story where I read the details, but apparently the story here is that one officer had unloaded the car at the amory, and left the rifle on the trunk.

Another officer got in the car without realizing the rifle was there. Drove to a nearby starbucks (where this picture was taken) and went inside for a coffee, came back out and drove off.

Somewhere along the way, a witness flagged down a bicycle officer, who radioed to the officer driving about the rifle.

I can't vouch for the validity of that story. I read it on one of the local Seattle news sites, so take it as you will..

OMG that evil assault weapon could have spontaneously gone off and killed every pre schooler within 2 miles!

Hannibal - mine does that so regularly its how I set my watch.

I mean what other purpose can they have its obviously an evil black rifle because it has one of those "shoulder thingies that goes up" (which is supposed to mean a barrel shroud).

I see how a pistol grip, flash suppressor and bayonet lug causes these things to go off without any outside influence. California is safer for banning those features. Now if they can just get people to stop shooting jet lines out of the air with 50 Cal's.

And neither of you thinks an assault rifle just hanging out on top of an illegally parked police car is a problem?

I believe they are more mocking those who only feel safe with the fire arms are in the "possession" of the police.

What I want to know is how it didn't slide right off the car as soon as he started driving.

Maybe he's a really careful driver. It sounds from Midgen's story that he didn't have to go far.

I doubt it. That would mean you'd need to pull against the magnet whenever you wanted to get it. Every gun lock I've ever seen in a police car is mechanical.
