 Post subject: ATT dsl problem

In the past few weeks, I've been experiencing drops. Modem internet light will turn red, and usually in a few seconds it will blink green and pick back up. But it's enough to interfere with gaming, streaming, etc. Sometimes, I have to do a modem reboot or repair to get it back.

ATT sent a guy out to check the lines, and he went in and out my house. Put a filter on the line outside and corrected a shoddy connection in the house that was just twisted wires (put them in a proper connector).

Nothing has changed, and the modem was working fine for the past 6-8 months. I have nothing else on the line, just straight to the jack where the modem is plugged. No new additions such as security systems, land lines, filters, nothing.

They "say" they have checked the system on their end. DSLAM was fine, etc.

So, after the tech gave an "okay" on the house line, it continues for 2 weeks to drop still. It's random. Sometimes I won't see it for 45 minutes or an hour. Other times I will see it happen 3 times in 15 minutes.

I did have a bad storm in the area right before this started. Lightening didn't hit the house or anything in it (as far as I know). Could it just be the modem? 2 wire is still under it's 1 year warrantee.......so I'm thinking replacing that before continuing to look for help from ATT. Yes?

If it's not the modem, then I have no idea what.....other than ATT's end, which of course they will continue to give me the run around.

We had a very similar problem...except ours happened every time it rained or there was too much moisture in the air....they sent a guy out and it turned out to be something wrong with the line a ways down the road...part of the wire was exposed or something and when the humidity or rain got to it, it quit working and then would resume when it dried. They fixed it and we didn't have a problem after that. Make sure they check the lines outside of the house and down the street.

Also, the tech had some tools to check the modem....went ahead and replaced ours for free, as it had something wrong with it in addition to the line thing I think. We had a great tech and he resolved both problems that afternoon...even climbing the telephone poles in a thunderstorm! I love AT&T. :)

What time of day do you notice the drops?

Go to best buy, and get a replacement modem. If it fixes it, take it back and get a replacement under warranty ;)

It has happened all times of the day.

So far, I haven't used the PC much today, but I've only seen it drop once in the short time I used it. I moved my ethernet cord to a different plug in the back of the modem, and will continue to watch it.

I still believe it is something on ATT's end, and not my end. I'll likely go the next few days to get a replacement modem from ATT, just to clear that part of the equation.

I had a similar problem last Summer with my cable company. Right around 10pm, I would start dropping connection every 15-20 minutes for about 30 seconds at a time. After a service call where a technician came out switched our splitter (which essentially told me there was nothing wrong on our end), the problem persisted. When I called again about it, the phone jockey informed me that customers were being dropped and reconnected all over their network due to overloading server capacity, and that I could upgrade to a higher package to fix the problem!

I then informed the phone monkey that everything worked fine during peak hours when their servers were under their greatest load, and that we weren't going to be paying more money to a company that was unable to provide promised services. This got me transferred to retention, where I outlined my theory that the company was holding my internet service hostage in an attempt to get me to pay more money, and that if it didn't clear up in a month I'd be changing to a different provider. The representative to whom I was speaking, to his credit, picked up on that very quickly.

As if by magic, the problem suddenly stopped that night.

What I'm getting at here is that you are dealing with a company that is in the business to make money. As long as they can convince you that the problem is on your end, they aren't paying the money to fix whatever is wrong. Tell them they've got a week before you go shopping. See if anything mysteriously clears up.

Unfortunately, they are the only option where I live.

I am now running it straight from the outside jack to see if my internal wiring has anything to do with it. If that doesn't show anything, I'll get the modem later today hopefully and try that. And if none of those do the trick, then it's definitely on their end.

Is there a way to log drops where I don't have to physically sit here and watch the little green/red light? :(

edit: Nevermind, it dropped right after I posted this. So, internal wiring isn't the problem then.

edit: Nevermind, it dropped right after I posted this. So, internal wiring isn't the problem then.

There may be, it depends on the gear. If you've got a web interface to your device, look around for a tab or menu item of logging or syslog.

New modem = no change.

Inside line = outside box = no change.

Time to call ATT again, and tell them this **** is on them. I'm sure they will deny, avoid, deflect me for a while longer. :roll:

So, Saturday I played twice for a few hours, with no troubles! I think to myself, problem must have been fixed, they just haven't told me personally. No biggie, if it works.

Then Sunday morning two drops. Sunday night, drop drop drop drop drop, I quit. Monday, drop drop drop drop.....let the PC idle, drop drop drop drop, turn the PC off drop drop drop drop.....call ATT. Go thru the spiel again........get a (what sounded like American male) tech on the phone, and told him my woes. He then proceeds with the whole "We will do some tests that will take a few minutes, and I will talk to my line guys" speech. Comes back, and wants my "secret question" to proceed further.

His words were...."Mrs. Lopez told us her favorite actor. Can you tell us the answer?"

Me......"Uh, I don't know Mrs. Lopez"

Oops......that account was still showing, it's the old account for that number. yeesh.

Anyways......a while later he calls me back, and they admit to a problem with the DSLAM. It's supposedly being worked on. They will call me back tomorrow to update me on the progress and to see if I am still experiencing drops.

I had to deal with this for almost a month, have a subcontractor (not an ATT guy, which upset me a bit tbh) come to check the inside lines and the box on the outside. Had to go get a replacement modem (apparently the old one was just fine). And had to call twice more before getting the "it's our problem" answer. Moroons. I told them over and over, it was their problem and likely the DSLAM hit by lightning during a recent storm, when the trouble started up.

Oh well, hope this gets fixed. The damn thing has been almost useless to me, even for simple surfing.
