I don't really know what to say. Stuff like this doesn't get much media attention outside of geek-sites. It probably wouldn't matter anyway. People wouldn't know to not like it. I don't support piracy, but it's up to the businesses to make themselves profitable. There have been similar examples in the past that I can't think of off the top of my head. It's the same general story. New technologies make it harder for an old business model. Old dusty guys get the government to put them on life support at the expense of everyone else.

Need more details. I don't see the sentiment as a bad thing, nor the "voluntary" (yes, I realize that with the Administration brokering an agreement, there's the impending threat of force. Yet, presumably, this is better for the more heavily threatened (by legislation) party than forcing it to come to those terms) nature of the agreement.

I'm perfectly happy to cede that the model may be outdated. Yet, I've yet to see any of those who argue so suggest a new way to use the technology that will facilitate the same quality that we've come to demand, as a market without such assurances that the creator of the IP can control its distribution.

In other words, you don't make hundred million dollar summer blockbusters on a "if you liked this movie, send us a dollar" basis. And nobody wants to watch the hundred dollar amateur projects on YouTube, even if they manage to scrape together $120 in donations. Instead, that audience who claims it would work goes and pirates Transformers 3.

Piracy doesn't cut into box office. At worst, it cuts into dvd/bluray sales, but...it's hard to say. It helps music sales...

Netflix and all the other online streaming services cut into dvd/bluray sales more. Eventually physical media for video purposes will mostly disappear.
