I wonder if it's OK to smoke now, because they could almost surely replace your lungs within a few decades.

this is cool; however, more with the artificial replacements and less with growing real one.

They are both competing emergering technologies. It'll be interesting to see what wins out one or two decades from now, or if it's something else entirely.

Considering that several of the states with the most biomedical research going on have banned embryonic stem cell research, I'm going to have to go with Poor Comparisons for $800, Alex.

I think this is the worth noting. An organ grown from embryonic stem cells would still have the risk of rejection. I'm not sure about cybernetic organs (other than it's a disadvantage in GURPS)

My guess is that they both will. That is, in the long run, they won't be competing technologies, but cooperative. I also think that at some point we'll wind up using genetically modified bacteria to "cheat" our way down to the nanotech scale. Why spend an enormous amount of R&D on creating a tiny, programmable, self-reproducing molecular factory when nature has already provided one?...

It's not meant to hold up to a strict comparison. It's meant as a "told you so" rebuttal to the cries of "But we need embryonic stem cell research because adult stem cells can't do the stuff we need!" when we were banning them.

I believe one of the hopes with embryonic stem cells was the creation of nerve related cells, which in general don't heal.

It uses embryos that are in many cases going to be destroyed anyway. (leftovers from artificial insemination for example) but hey, if you want to call it baby-killing .....

My understanding was that all that was banned was federal funding and the creation of extra embryos for research purposes, but I could be wrong.

The science they are using for the currently adult stem cells stems from the original research from embryotic ones. While the adult stem cell research grew beyond the original research, the embryotic ones stagnated due to regulation.

While the adult stuff are great, they are limited to the type of tissues they have already been programed into. The embryotic ones however, do not yet have such restrictions. The adult is also limited by their owner's supply of these cells, while the embroytic are not.

It is actually a shame that the research on embryotic have stopped as science tend to have a way of eventually making synthetic cells if the research was given a chance to mature. e.g. insulin. However at this rate, we'll never know.
