Pretty cool product. I can see wearing one for safety.

It is going to be expensive when it hits the market here, and people will be trying to legislate it to be mandatory within a few years.

Invest in the company now, even if you have no plans to ever wear one.

That's all fine and good. The problem is, wearing all that shyt completely conflicts with the reason most people ride in the first place.

Do you ride a motorcycle purely for the fact it is generally economically superior mode of transport for a single person? That isn't even universally true, as my R6 and many other middleweight supersports and larger bikes get worse gas mileage than my current car (43MPG avg, regular unleaded).

The fact is, motorcycling is appealing because it is unrestricted. You aren't watching the scenery, you're IN it. That's what makes it so different than riding in a car, even a convertible or targa. Riding in gear certainly reduces this to an effect.

I've been riding for over half my life at this point. I've ridden with gear and without gear. There is absolutely no substantive difference in the level of immersion into the environment or ability to experience all that motorcycling has to offer between wearing gear or not. It's like claiming that somehow you aren't as "free" to experience riding if you're wearing Jeans instead of shorts, or boots instead of flip-flops.

Now, I will say that good quality gear makes a big difference over crappy gear from a comfort and usefulness standpoint, but that is another issue all together.

I don't mind all the gear so much (unless it's really hot, and then I still wear it) but I do mind the way the military makes us wear retarded orange safety vests when we're riding.

The military can take the fun out of anything...

The Army doesn't make you wear an orange vest, but it does have a lot of other restrictions. It comes from the propensity of soldiers to not be able to just have fun, but to be unable to do almost any form of recreation without getting carried away and getting someone hurt or killed, without heavy safety restrictions and constant "safety briefings". Then of course, there's drinking...

There's also the fact that you can only ride the motorcycle for 5-7 months out of the year, and have to buy a different mode of transportation for the other half. Unless you somehow enjoy riding the bike in heavy rain or in winter.

I live on Fort Meade, and the Army (base commander) does, in fact, make me wear a fruity orange vest (at least on base). Of course, the 70th Wing Commander thought that was such a great idea that he made it a blanket policy off-base, too. I don't think he has enough work to do if he has time to worry about orange motorcycle vests...

What annoys me about that is not being IN the Army and still having to listen to him because the Air Force thinks it's funny to send 1Ns and 3Ds to Fort Meade instead of Andrews. ;)

Depends on where you live. In Colorado Springs I rode around 310 days a year. Actually I could about do that here in Maryland, too. Riding in heavy rain isn't all that bat, either (it's riding in heavy hail that sucks).

I didn't say no motorcycle were available with superior fuel economy, just that it isn't universally true that motorcycles are more efficient.

And yes, the degree too which riding in gear reduces the experience isn't absolute. But that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, which is the point. As for my personal experience, I've always rode in a minimum of helmet, jacket, gloves if I was driving to go out to eat or meet up and if I was driving on the interstate or fast two laners, pants that zip into the jacket as well as some nice Sidi Vortice boots replete with toe sliders. However, I have ridden in nothing but a helmet on the odd occasion, and the experience is markedly different. The ability to feel wind on your skin is magnitudes more liberating than having it on a leather jacket, even though I opted to have my jacket sleeves perforated. The drawback, of course, is that asphalt on the skin isn't very fun.

I know four people who own motorcycles.

None of them ride them more than a few times a year, and they all cite having to wear heavy, weatherproof gear, and having to carry an extra set of clothes and shoes with them as the reason they don't ride them to work more often...

Saw a girl pulled over by the CHP once. I had no idea what her offense was, other than looking really nice in a red bikini, cowboy boots and nothing else. She had a helmet in her hand, so that probably wasn't it.

Ahh, I see. A local regulation. No, he probably does not have enough to do, but on the other hand, soldiers and presumably airmen too) getting their stupid asses killed on motorcycles tends to attract a lot of attention from higher u.

You could probably ride all year round here in south Texas. I'll have to see what winter is like.
