So you can't have sushi when you are pregnant, even the cooked kind apparently because it is made around the non-cooked kind, which is absolutely terrible because I REALLY want some sushi.

So. I want to make some at home...here is what I have:

Nori (regular and teryaki flavored)
Jasmine rice (I also have a rice cooker)
Seasoned white wine rice vinegar
Sashimi sauce
Frozen cooked shrimp

I don't need a 5 star recipe, at this point I'd even settle for throwing it all in a bowl and eating it like it is, lol.
Help? Please please?

OK, it won't be perfect because you have the wrong rice, but it'll work for a bowl.

Cook the rice. White its hot sprinkle it with the seasoned vinegar. Sort of toss it around with your hands while it cools and absorbs. Thaw the shrimp. Cut unto smallish chunks and toss into the rice. Add cucumber, red pepper, shredded carrot, whatever veggies you have on hand. Use the nori to pick up the rice mix and eat it out of hand.

And if you can pick up sushi rice next time. It's a pretty cheap and easy thing to make yourself if you're not expecting it to look perfect.

I'm confused. You said you can't have it while you are pregnant, but you are making some anyway?

She's worried, rightfully so, about the possible microbial contamination of sushi being made around non-cooked items. If she makes it herself, she can make sure everything is properly cooked before she eats it.

What Taamar said, trust her.

Also consider vegetarian sushi. Carrot sticks, avocado, tofu . . . Also consider trying fruit sushi, mango, strawberries, apples, pears, anything firm and crunchy might help.

To clarify, pregnant women can't have RAW sushi. You can order cooked sushi, but its not recommended because its all prepared in the same area.

Thanks, Taamar. The nori is in a package dried...do you have to soak it or do you use it dry? Jasmine rice can get pretty sticky, so like you suggested should be fine. :) Thank you.

You can use it dry. Also, check out your grocery store 'sushi', some of them are made in places that don't handle any raw ingredients.

Ok thanks. Our grocery stores don't have any sushi, unfortunately, I had to drive 45min away just to get the nori...I looked for sushi rice but I didn't see any, just a 5lb bag of Jasmine rice, which I am familiar with since I have two Vietnamese brothers...I also bought some bean thread and some udon noodles. I wish we had rice paper and fish sauce...I'd love some vietnamese spring rolls with nuoc mam.

I can find all that without leaving my small town, and more of it just across the river at the big city. You live in small town USA, you pay the price.

You can make your own fish sauce, but your kids and husband might object to the year of fermenting the anchovies. It is for sale online too, get it delivered to your home, reasonably quickly.

Now I want some Pho.

There is an Asian store that just opened up 45 minutes in the opposite direction of where I went shopping today....I hope to make it over that way sometime next month. Hopefully I can get all the ingredients I need over there.
And yes, there are advantages and disadvantages to everyplace...I do enjoy my smalltown, but I also miss out on a lot of culture and diversity, unfortunately.

I think we all should have a meet-up in Denver for soup and other fine ethnic dining comparisons. We could do San Francisco, for the fresh fish, right off the boats. After the baby is born, LK needs to stay put for now.

When you go to the Asian market, buy a sushi mat as well as the sushi rice...you seem to have the other ingredients needed. Sushi isn't hard to make and you can make it however you like. Just like anything else, keep your work surface clean...raw meats on one cutting board, vegies on another.

Homemade sushi is easy, fun, and tasty...and cheaper than going to a sushi bar! :D

just as an FYI, the sushi rice might be labelled as medium grain, depending on what kind of store you go to..


This is what I use when I make onigiri, so its the same stuff...


and yes, i do buy the 20 lb bags

No matter what your bag of rice says, do NOT skip the washing procedure
