I just wish that everyone would hold science to their same standards for religion. Faith is faith regardless of which guy in a white coat is professing it.

Who puts that much faith in a single scientist, or even a single branch of science? No one.

Virtually nobody. Anyone who thinks science is based on "faith" doesn't understand the purpose of science.

When's the last time you calculated the speed of light? And, when did you prove it was a constant in a vacuum?

When, in fact, have you ever proved it to be a constant anywhere? Or, do you just ... believe?

There are certain assumptions a person must make, simply to live. Those assumptions are not faith, they are just "working with the best information we have." Those particular assumptions can be overthrown, if the universe ever proves them wrong to us, but for now, those assumptions serve us well.

This is true at the personal level, and at every level of science.

Sure, I don't have the technology or knowledge to test the speed of light myself. I take some things in "good faith". We do, however, have the scientific method. Science backs up my observations of real life with explanations that make sense. It assigns values that seem consistent in every scenario I encounter, so I've been given no reason to harbor mistrust toward science, or its advocates.

I don't look to any one person to tell me the speed of light. I look to thousands of minds around the globe that have done real, repeatable experiments with real evidence suggesting they're correct. I show "faith" in their consensus.

Me? Never.

However, I do know for a fact that there were MANY scientists who did do these calculations, and finally all agreed that the values were correct given what we know now. Further, I know that if some scientist comes up with new information that perhaps challenges those calculations and values, that it will go through a very rigorous process of peer review and examination by probably literally hundreds of scientists and if that new information proves out to be true, then all those old calculations will be re-examined and adjusted as needed with our new understanding.

It's that continual formal process of self examination that makes science nothing like religion what so ever.

The problem with taking anything, even the most basic 'laws' as fact, is that we don't know what we don't know.

what exactly is the problem you see with that?

We operate on basic assumptions until we find a reason to change. We assume that gravity wont turn off when we take each step.

Because if you assume you already know the answer, you stop looking...

There is a scientist named Michael to which an enormous amount of people place an absurd amount of faith, to a dogmatic level no less, despite evidence his "work" is biased and compromised, and lacks the foundations of scientific experiment.

We reverse theories and improve them all the time. Your assumption is not backed up by history.

Obviously ... the only acceptable resolution to the impending impasse is to have GlaDOS inculcate you with some sort of actual definition for the word science.

I never could get into Atomic Robo or How I Killed Your Master. It looked like a neat concept, but at the time it just seemed like they were distracting him from finishing 8-Bit Theater.
